Nope
WB bought Turbine for the LoTR License.
That allowed them to consolidate the license to get it almost all encompassing in the edition world like the old ICE license was in it's time.
( Basically they have : Games [ board and computer ], Films, RPGs, and all the derived products, ICE had almost the same thing
[ they didn't have films, and in 1982 Saul Zaentz didn't think computer games would be what they are now, so it wasn't written ] )
DDO was just the bastard child of the Atari Debacle that came along with the deal, WB never cared about it.
Just look at things that way :
- DDO European Closure : Players left hanging 4 months before they get their characters back.
Both European Servers are merged with G-Land.
Players have to create a new account, subscribe again to the game ( and make sure the old Codemasters Subscription was cancelled )
- LoTRO Europe Closure : Players update their game after a planned maintenance window ( 12 Hours ), and they are automatically sent to
Turbine New Servers, that are the exact copy of the old Codemasters Servers after agreeing for the transfer of their subscription.
Turbine had the power to do things fast and cleanly for LoTRO, while they couldn't be arsed to do it for DDO...
There was less than a year between both closure/transfer. So technology was not the reason they didn't do for DDO what they did for LoTRO.
Now with the orders to 'Go Mobile', we are going to see Clash Of Clans : Middle Earth Edition, Turbine Powered and lost of stuff like that...
The problem is that the fucking PHB at WB have no clue about mobile game design... Most of the hits are done by small companies of 5-10 people at first...
and when it becomes a hit they become a 100+ company to support the game, which allows them to roll out more games. ( usually derivative of the same basic idea :
Angry Bird and all the variations thereof; Candy Crush and all the derivations thereof; Clash of Clans or Goodgame Empire and all the derivations thereof )
So they are going to Fail... Totally... But well, that's for the future.
