Don't listen this cry baby's, past life's are a must, you need XP stones and all you can get/dupe. kind of puts you in the not bringing anything to the group. I just group fro the social interaction, if i wanted a bunch of hirelings i would bring them. It is not like your contribution makes a fucking difference otherwise. (you as in every human, not necessarily you personally)

You said that if you run solo you get hammered. The people that run quests for max XP/minute typically don't run quests with a group/ team mentality they are a group of people questing together but they are basically soloing the quests in a group.
They have built their characters to be 100% self sufficient and also their characters gear,stats,heal amp ETC. maxxed out.
What I mean by they are soloing as a group is that one guy in the group will say ill kill the boss you go get the optional the third guy do this or that and everyone is working together to complete the but the players are not staying in the same part of the quest and aren't doing group type stuff like healing each other, protecting each other and whatnot.
At this stage of the game where solo content is kicking your butt you are much better off to be running slower in a group with someone healing you and other players assisting you in dpsing mobs etc.
If you don't run the quests slow and learn them and you go straight to joining zerg groups you will have a hard time keeping up and when someone says hey XXX can you take care of the underwater optional or whatever you won't have a clue what they mean.
You will likely be left behind in the quest because you don't know it and will be killed by mobs or a trap or whatever costing the group 10%.   Groups who are running for xp per minute have a coronary when someone costs them 10%.
This is why the previous advice has been if you join zerg groups to basically pike at the beginning of the quest ( so you don't die and cost the group 10%) and to recall without the chests ( because you don't want to hold the group up).
Finally many of these types of groups will run the higher XP quests multiple times at different difficulty's to max their XP. This is a quick way to earn XP but not fun for newer players as you will not be learning the quests or seeing much new content.   
Just play the game and everything else will come together. You will figure out which quests provide more XP, you will get better gear and more past lives and soon you will be like man I remember when that quest used to be difficult. At some point solo content will get easy. You will be able to go AFK for a smoke with mobs beating on you and you won't worry about dying and all the quests will seem too easy.
Then you will want to find new ways to challenge yourself to keep the game interesting. Things like trying to see how fast you can solo a certain quest or can I get to lvl 20 in 2 days that sort of thing but the time for that is later on young grasshopper.
