What did not get fixed was the stuck audio background music from being in the demonweb (or from other places, not sure why).

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but that sounds like maybe a DirectX issue?

Would love to try anything to fix it.  I've updated/tried different versions of audio driver; directx is kind of "baked into" windows 7 right? (everything passes in the directx audio tab).  I've tried the software vs hardware audio setting in the client (although that's probably worth revisiting, not sure what I have it set to now).

I've had that happen a few times, but not enough to make me look into it.  I generally keep music at zero volume, though, after listening to it once, so it might happen more, I just haven't noticed.

Sort of not-really related to anything, but if you have some kind of @.edu address, you can usually find legit softwares for reeeeeeally cheap.  I got Wind7 pro for about 30 bucks using a friend's email.  Not than anybody likes to buy shit, but it helps when you swap parts out and have to call them to reactivate.

I got those occasionally on my former (much more powerful) computer, and quite often on my current (crappy) computer.

There was a fix that worked well, something about dedicating more RAM to gaming applications, and it worked for me, but it was lost to time after the forum changeover, and I'm not nearly literate enough to tell you the process.

Yes, this worked for my old system @meathead.

Google "windows 7 userva" and you'll find the info you need.  I set mine for 2500 and it worked around the problem for me.

Although ddo is still a 32bit app (and so will never grow beyond the 2gig memory limit) I think memory leaks still cause an issue for some 32bit systems.  Increasing the user virtual memory address space above the 2gig cap seems to give ddo a little more room.

I have the same problem on my system after running demonweb.  I still haven't figured that one out yet, but it's not a big issue for me (yeah, lazy)

Awesome, thanks.

I remember 2500 being the magic number to avoid Desert crashes, too.

Edit:

Run Command Prompt as administrator, enter

bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA XXXX

Where the Xs are the amount of RAM you want to allocate.  2500 seems to work well.

I tried this when my system was win xp 32bit, but it didn't help.  It caused more issues than helped, one of them being weird video/resolution issues.  ymmv.
