Reaper is doing another miniature kickstarter. Their first two had a goal of $30k and got ~$3.4 mil. It's an amazing deal with great customer service. Get 200+ D&D minis for $100. Check it out: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1513061270/reaper-miniatures-bones-3-the-se...

That's fucking brilliant! Get a cheap injection molding setup (or a 3D printer), make all this shit for pennies a pop, "give" them away in a kickstarter campaign.

Pretty basic business case, except for the fact that they didn't sell anything (no sales tax), didn't receive any income - only investments (no income tax). Oh, and they don't have to make a single product until they're paid, and if they fail to ship, oh well, it was just a pledge prize.

Fucking genius. I figure out of that $3.4m, $3.0m was solid profit.

If they wanted $30k and got $3.4M, why are they back to kickstarter?
What did they do with the $3.4M?
Must be expensive living in the Cayman Islands and they need some more drink money.

Seriously, that isn't a kickstarter, it's just a way to move product.
And they have "waves" of releases so no-one misses out (ie. they don't miss a single sale).  Nice marketing.
As Strakeln said, someone is cleaning up big time.

probably $3.35m profit.  kickstarter is a license to scam.

That's an investment worth repeating.

I've been trying to tell my wife that she needs to get into this online tchotsky business. Shit like that is huge when you can reach 6 billion people. Personalized cookie cutters, custom crayons, t-shirts, pictures printed on <mugs/wood/t-shirts/whatever>. The trick has always been how to get exposure. This group solved that puzzle, for a little while at least.

$5m in sales in total.
These same mini customers are potential DDO customers looking to turn their DnD experience into a visual medium.....

Turdbine - those potential customers just dropped $1.5m in a few days....
(And no I'm not recommending you sell minis!)

Shipping comes out of that money, and from the size of what I got with the first KS all those years ago, it's a solid $10-15 to ship.

Of course, the quality was piss-poor and I never painted the horrid little things.

I use Kickstarter for my own work all the time, but I'll never Kickstart again.

I just swung by the Reaper Kickstarter to see how it went, and it is still going.

I also just noticed that you pay now for delivery in October 2016.....   WTF?

How long does it take to print plastic fracking minis?

They have $3M in the bank from last time, and we're expected to believe they need these seed funds to design and make the new minis.  They also have a perfectly viable operating business selling metal minis - why do they need seed funds?  Do they end up selling these plastic minis lines as well?  This is just another marketing channel to suck you into thinking you're getting a great special deal.

They already have the bloody prototype minis designed as they're in the pics - all they need to do is create the molds/templates and start printing.   What a scam - I thought you get them in Oct 2015.

So they have almost $2M in pledges that they can now invest and earn interest on whilst they holiday in the Maldives, pay some Chinese kid 12c/day to make the casting molds and then send an SMS to China in Aug/Sept 2016 to start prodn and have delivery by Oct 2016.

Very nice.  I need to get myself a kickstarter project - there are at least 11,700 potential suckers out there......

Smiley

Sure. I end up pocketing over half the pledges as profit when I do up a Kickstarter, but there's that whole multiple months of work to get it out the door thing.

I have no problem with making a profit, but not sure that kickstarts is the place to do that.
Kick starter is supposed to help you get off the ground, and then you make a profit.

Making plastic minis does not take 12-15 months......

I'm saying that "profit" is what I use to feed myself while I write the damn thing. Were it not for the huge margin I build in, I wouldn't be able to stop making small things, sit down, and build a 300-page monster.

I expect something similar went down with Bones I. From what I understand, they own the plastic production systems now and it's just pure profit at this point.

Hell, I even released the book in thirds as I went to keep storefront sales going. In the end, I septuple dipped the damn thing to get it out the door. And people were fine with that because it turned it into a choose your own level.

Tell that to the order of the stick douche who raked in over a MILLLLLION dollars drawing shitty stick figures on the web.  the 'hurt his hand' and couldn't honor the pledge rewards for... I dunno... a year or so.

you think even 10% of that went to 'production' costs?  shit he even bought a new house!
