I played Game Of War for a while.  Unless you want to drop serious cash, you will just be frustrated.  It isn't F2P, it is P2Win all the way.  There are players spending literally 10k plus at the start of a new kingdom(world) spawn to race to the top.

Oh, did you catch them including Lord of the Rings in the "Dead MMOs" category? That's gotta sting  Grin

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

Is LotRO back up yet?

Do not try the patience of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger.

We are dreamers, shapers, singers, and makers. We study the mysteries of laser and circuit, crystal and scanner, holographic demons and invocation of equations. These are the tools we employ, and we know many things.

The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Mmo is dying, mobile games and moba are evolving rapidly, especially mobile games.

What is the point of a mobile game for a community of decidedly non-mobile basement dwellers? Once they invent the mobile basement then we can stick a fork in the traditional MMO.

I wanna see an MMORPG called Guidos vs Ninjas: a time-warping portal opens up over Hoboken, N.J. and various ninjas from feudal Japan fall out of the sky.  Upon character creation, you have to choose, Guido or Ninja.  Guidos must pick one of 5 families" Gamblino, Bonanas, Luccheasy, Ginovese, or Colombus.  Ninjas must pick one of 5 clams: Koga, Iga, Fuuma, Hattori, Azumi.  The 5 factions within each group are war with each other, as well as a game mechanic that forces Ninjas and Guidos into combat based on proximity; if they're anywhere near eachother, they must fight; where as Ninjas can only fight other Ninjas (or Guidos against other Guidos) by choice.  Guidos have access to modern weaponry, while Ninjas get suped-up versions of ancient weapons.  Countless special abilities: e.g. Guidos can get temporary invincibility (Palooka Power) while Ninjas can get temporary invisibility (Shadowmeld).  The point of the game would by to vie WITHIN your sub group (Guido or Ninja) for supremacy against all rival factions, while also maintaining a higher kill count: the game tracks dead Ninjas and Guidos constantly, so the idea would be to make the opposing groups number bigger.  This would be done in the context of also shoring up support for you faction, ensuring you're not overly vulnerable to getting wiped the fuck out by your own kind.

It's more than lacking on the live action part, but yes...some here seem to consider it it's own RPG.

There are many limitations in the MMO genre, and too many developers trying to make a carbon copy of WoW and failing.

With the advent of the smartphone era, the mobile gaming business model is the new trend. And if that's the future of MMO gaming, I don't envision a bright future for MMOs at all. I watched the video you linked and my thought was, "the MMO genre is devolving, not evolving."

Wrong.  The new trend is competition-oriented MMO games: League of Legends, and games like it, where the whole point is to kick everyone's ass while you chug beer.  DDO is based on cooperation; which is fucking gay.  That's why the Ninjas vs. Guidos concept is so awesome.

Meh. I enjoy playing with my friends, not against them (at least not for more than a few rounds). And playing against random scrubs is also meh. There's the occasional person who is just as cool to play against as with, but it's mostly just a bunch of KNNs.

WHL think of it as DDO in reverse.  DDO is mostly a gay-pride parade where the devs change the rules all the time, and PVP never took off.  Those competitive MMO's have single player modes, co-op modes, and stable content for those that don't have garganutan balls of epic proportions; but you're finger-banging through an open zipper with that shit.  The real anal is building a wet-works team and going all-out on every last motherfucker that wants to step.

The MOBA genre and competitive games in general is a different subject altogether. While they're massively multiplayer, they're not RPGs. And my impression was that the video in question which spurred the whole discussion was referring to MMORPGs specifically.

When I think of MMORPGs, WoW, WoW clones, DDO, and this newer generation of half-assed mobile MMOs come to mind. And of these, only WoW and the new mobile MMOs seem to be experiencing popularity at the moment. I think it's at least partly a function of the smartphone era.

So if we're talking in terms of the shift of MMOs' popularity in general from WoW/WoW clones to the newer mobile games, I'd say it's devolving.

If we're talking in terms of the shift of MMOs' popularity from MMORPGs to MOBAs, I'd say it's changing.

Dear players,

The D&D rules you were familiar with were too simple to understand, so we're continuing our move away from them to needlessly confusing subsystems that will make your play experience less fun and invalidate old builds and loot. We hope you have fun working out what the fuck MRR, PRR, MP, SP, RP, CL, MCL and all the other bullshit we made up whilst drunk means.

Love,

People who don't know how to fix their own mistakes cleanly
