Just asking after having played a few melee and ranged toons, its time for something different. I don't really have any real source or wiz gear so looking for something to get me started. I looked into the sorc/pali (18/2) build, which might serve.

This I think is more like sit in the firewall and swing a weapon (in heavy armor). I am not sure that is exactly what I want, but without gear it maybe the easier option.

I would rather not spend more money on the game right now as I am returning after a break. Good advice is much appreciated, the other stuff not as much Tongue

There's a 2 paladin/18 sorcerer build that looks like a fantastic amount of fun. You go Warforged for self-healing(bladeforged = even better) and use great axes. Its mostly a melee build with a lot of charisma, and you use a lot of SLAs for cheaper spellcasting.

Only real item you need to get started is a greensteel conc/MP item.

I feel your struggle, I've had not the greatest of luck on my first caster life owing mostly to not even KNOWING what gear I am supposed to have Tongue Back to melees for mes!!

What does the Shiradi Easy Button usually do, combat wise? Is it just cast spells or are you a melee spellcaster? What spells are preferable?

Spells only.  Typically a rotation of Missle SLAs an non-meta Missle spells with a few other spells thrown in.

Maybe I've just been playing my wizard wrong, but I could never get enough damage out of my missile spells and SLAs to stay alive, What's the secret?

The secret is to use shiradi and spam the shit out of spells.  Shiradi has extremely high variability, but on average, magic missile in shiradi is equivalent to polar ray in damage.  You will frequently get almost no damage for a few casts, and then get a spike for 5000+ damage all of a sudden.

14 sorc 4 fvs 2 Pali/wiz shiradi mana battery build is really good too.  Or any combo of level.  Prefer 2pali for saves etc bf.

16/2/2 sorc/fvs/Pali. As well.

Force sp and crit chance. Splash 2fvs for mana battery extra crits.  Only prob is more max shiradi need fire spec, but a lot of stuff immune to fire.

Thanks for the replies, one issue I have is really I am not a fan of robots. I just have no real desire to play one, even if they are the bees knees. I may change me mind but not right now.

What about a spell casting bard? I tried one bard with some sonic spells but only to lvl 12. Were there some recent changes that would allow sonic /air caster bard / ?

Go spellsinger bard evoker (human/drow or flavor race). With a touch of warchanter for medium armor and buffing minions.

Max, Emp, Quicken, Heighten, SF:Evo, GSF:Evo, possibly extend if you're lazy and need 4 minute displace instead of 2 min. and minions like extended haste.
Hotbar Sonic Blast SLA, Sonic Blast spell, Shout SLA; at level 12 add Horn of Thunder, sing Sustaining Song for heals.

One/two shot elite rooms full of mobs like a warlock, while being a lowly bard; healing/buffing everyone around.

And if you don't like it, you can fall back to swashbuckler or a freezer bard.

Bard SS sucks ass through a straw in Epics and is meh'ish in Heroics,

you can't compare them to Warlocks, there is no competition.

That's more like it, no longer a caster though.

Turbine does not admit to nerfs. They make "adjustments" and then phrase them in a way that sounds like a buff in the release notes (to the clueless.)

"Overall experience for the quest "House of Rusted Blades" has been increased - base experience for the quest has been reduced, but the experience for the optional objectives has been increased even more."

Evoking spellsingers are obscenely strong in heroic and they bring significant utility to a group. Arguably, they do require ED abilities to contribute in epics.

I can compare them to warlocks. They have higher DCs, less DPS, and they are more fun. Also, OP expressed interest in bard and no interest in warlock.

I hope the new feats will help them contribute more in epics.

less DPS

so... worse.

Warlock isn't exactly high DPS to begin with.  Great AoE and trash clear, but lacking on boss DPS.  I can't imagine playing a build that has it even worse.

Shiradi arcanes especially shiradi wizards are looking to be fairly future proof based on lamannia.

This.  Make sure you have double rainbow set up and on for Shiradi.  Maxing up your sonic spell power in addition to force helps a lot as well.
