I remember playing the original when I was ~6-7.  Shit scared the crap out of me, nightmares for an entire year.

Oh God, please no. Don't even joke about that.

New games suck, but Mankind Divided and SS 3 might suck a bit less Tongue
Deus Ex, SS2 and AvP were my favs too.

Also the otherside entertainment logo in your tease page should really double as a link back to your main website.

Huh. I'll be damned. Underworld Ascendant IS still in development.

I wonder how long that will take to be released.  Roll Eyes

Hey Mal how proud you are about your buddies in turdbine?

Dear players,

The D&D rules you were familiar with were too simple to understand, so we're continuing our move away from them to needlessly confusing subsystems that will make your play experience less fun and invalidate old builds and loot. We hope you have fun working out what the fuck MRR, PRR, MP, SP, RP, CL, MCL and all the other bullshit we made up whilst drunk means.

Love,

maybe. But let me tell you working with 10-15 year old tech and then moving on to using new engines...jeezus its like coming out of the stone ages. I love DnD as much as the other guy, but seriously, at this point working on that old stuff is only hurting a career.
And besides its not like I'm not playing with dwarves and elves anyway, the only difference is I don't have to deal with WotC.

The tech may be old but not one single other game, either PC or Console, comes close to the character control, movement and combat action DDO has.   Despite the numerous shortcomings DDO has character control alone makes the game over and beyond any other I have played.

Other games have detailed character development, imaginative stories and brilliant graphics which is cool but the character control is always ALWAYS slow and stupid compared to DDO.

Not to mention the ridiculous amount of hotbar customization DDO has.

DDO may be old with bugs and bad decisions but I very rarely if ever give any newer game consideration because they never measure up.

not sure what you mean about character control--but if it you mean actual real time action--instead of say neverwinter style, sure..but outside of the MMO space...wow, no way.
Dishonored is sublime in locomotion and combat. Best in show currently. New Fallout isn't to shabby for a RPG shooter either.
Character Creation--here is the thing for me looking back at DDO, its cool and super complicated builds are their own game but is it totally needed? How many skills are there that no one ever takes-unless it is just a means to an end?
Wouldn't it be cooler if instead of just having some meta system what if you are a Kensai warrior, your whole combat style was actually different in play? Not just better numbers?
Barbarians played like out of control maniacs at a Dropkick Murphy's concert?
Thieves sneaking, wall climbing/pakour was a real thing, mages were not just statting to make that fireball deadly, but figuring out interesting ways to use spells beyond damage and Status effects?
For example we build spells to do things--say they effect wood, we leave it to you to figure out how to use that spell in creative ways. I've already seen players do some batshit things in our prototype that we never thought of. Then...chaining these things together...it is orgasmic as a gamer. Yes, currently we have no casting time between spells--and honestly I might leave it that way because it is fucking cool. Making some boxes levitate, then casting a hold spell on them mid air and using them as a staircase is cool, or jumping on that levitating box, and remove the hold spell and ride it like an elevator--or take that same box , levitate it can light it on fire and 'push' it with telekinsis into a rope that burns that an enemy was climbing...Mana cost is enough to control the player from being SirSpamAlot.
This is what I'm building. One of the things I dislike about the whole MMO thing is the way the worlds are designed, there is no agency, and rules are adhered to rigidly. You guys know this as the whole exploit culture.Part of the fun of any game is breaking the world, pushing the boundries. When it is not part of the game play--well, time to start duping exc. It's fun I get it. Game within a game.  Why don't designers just embrace people being clever? Infuriating.
Looking Glass design philosophy is to get out of the way of the player. To not force a playstyle, or even a single way to defeat a mission. Want to be a rogue that is good with axes and fire magic? sure go nuts. want to build out your character to be uber whatever? do that.Want to play though using no skills at all..sweet--and send us a video of that.  It's your game to play, we just built the playground and the initial rule book--instead of guidelines that can be changed on the player later on.

You know, everyone says these things, and yes, they're all things we'd love to see. Does it ever happen? Nope. Sure, you can mod the hell out of a game like Skyrim, but even with that there's little you can do to environments, for instance. Maybe it's a tech thing.

Also, let's take your boxes example. Ok, levitate the box. Let's say it's a spell, so menu or hotbar selection, and targeting, to pick your box(es). Hold spell, something else from menu/hotbar, with more targeting, so you can put it where you want. Jump on the box, ok, then release the hold spell. Hmmm, select the object and end one effect?

All of the above takes time, which is something that may or may not be in short supply, and people may or may not care. In a single player game. In an MMO, you'd have people that can't reach the box, people who will accidentally break the box, and people who will purposefully break the box, or add some other detrimental thing to mix. So we get unfuckable environments, and our ability to effect it is very limited, if it exists at all.

Post vids somewhere.

It doesn't happen with the big guys because they don't like to lose control. Even open games like Skyrim want you to just do some very specific things-craft, kill, and follow the story. There are no interesting spells...at least none come to mind. There are creative ways to screw with the world, but they don't embrace it, it just sort of is there...and half of it is bugs in the game engine.

Here is the spell prototype and some fan screwing with it. These graphics are spartan on purpose, and not reflective of the real game. Think of this as test box. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSmf6kQwnT0
Look, having a physics based world is actually easy. Part of the time consuming parts in older engines is stuffing all the dependencies into an object. Now, with UE4 and Unity this is about this hard: Drag...drop.  The spell system I described is already running in a rudimentary form, and players have gotten pretty damn fast at switching spells. We currently allow 3 spells to be active at a time. The only rule for non-interactivity is walls cant be destroyed, pretty much everything else is fair game.
As for no one makes these games--well, we did, but it was 15-20 years ago. Same with a number of other guys back in the day.

Fucking Skyrim, I was so pissed off in my first ever playthrough  as a fire / healing character, and I couldn't combine both spells for offensive damage against undead.
