And here's Steelstar, the dev who plays artis, commenting with a "maybe it does, maybe it doesn't" post about the mechanics he should be the most familiar with:

The thing about Artificer trees is that there's little to lose. Can they bungle the tree revamp? Definitely. Can they bungle it in a way anyone will notice? Only through accidental "features". Even replacing every enhancement with a zero-effect would be (hyperbolically) the same as what's there now.

LOL build an arty, take 2 rogue and run the mechanic tree into the dirt.

I don't think I have any arty tree (certainly nothing more than 5-10 points at any rate) on any of my arty's.

Would be nice if they could give us a reason to use the tree but I am calling that they are just going to give them a thematically re-branded mechanic.
