State of GS?
Aug 16th, 2017 at 6:16am
Print Post
A few years ago there was still a massive stigmata against vorpal weapons, but now all the kids* seem to be running around with them - even at higher levels where GS used to be the mainstay.

The new loot gen seems to have more damage and improved vorpal is...well...improved.  I always thought vorpal was overlooked (even if it didn't vorp, 100 extra damage on a crit is no small number) but does it really stack up against GS's DR breaking and stacking effects?

The one thing that really has me debating what I've been programmed to use is the meteoric star ruby (thanks again RolyPoly, you totally rock).  A vorp weapon with a red slot and extra damage effect is absolutely devastating lower and mid levels.  The power of this augment is just crazy and making this life a breeze.  But does it hold up past level 11?

So, has anyone crunched the numbers?  What's going to do more damage in the level 15-19 quests?  A level 12 GS axe, or a level 16 improved vorp with the ruby?

*damn kids and their rock n' roll records

SoS w/ Imp.critical. Can do the eldritch ritual for 1 pt of force damage for the icing on the cake.
I swear nothing beats a crit profile like that. Just nothing.

Yes.

The issue is, like "back in the day", that their uses are situational.

GS has consistent damage across the board and some great weapon procs (Like Lit 2) but vorpal wipes out anything "killable" on a natural 20 under 1000/1500/x HP (I forget what the cut-off is for Sovereign Vorpal), adds 0.5 Weapon damage, and 100 critical damage on anything it doesn't kill outright.

Vorpal weapons shine in Reaper because you're actually more likely to roll and 20 and confirm before you can grind down a mob's HP, do to attentuated DPS. So in that case, Vorpal is better, assuming that the mob isn't Deathblocked, because Vorpal counts as a Death Effect.

If you're having a good time with your Vorpal Meteor, roll with it. This game is starving for variety anyway.

Have some fun with it.  Cheesy

Vorpals are strong in content with livings that are large sacks of HP.  They don't do the pure DPS of GS, though.  I carry both on melee and ranged characters. Disruptors and smiters are equally fun.  As are paralyzers.

Level 18 quests can be fun.  In IQ1 and 2, some mobs start with 3k HP.  And you are doing strongly reduced damage on 5 skulls+.  You can use paralyzers, alternate stunning blow and trip, or whatever, until you get them low enough to Vorpal.  If some stupid warlock doesn't get in there and finger them first.  Sad

When I started a new toon, I swore I was going to go through without GS.  I was kind of looking forward to forcing myself to try all the named weapons I used to pass up thinking "that's really cool, shame it does half the damage of GS, otherwise I'd probably use it."

But after my abysmal DPS through my ranger lives, I went running back to the shroud like a little bitch.  When you group up and you're not holding your own or pulling your own weight and you know it's because of your weapons, you want to do something about it (he actually had decent DPS built in, just only goes so far if you're not using the best weapon).

I fucking hate GS for that reason.  How many years has it been the go to?  How many years was it the only real option?  How many years was it that when you grouped with a party, you knew that every single melee in the group had the exact same fucking sword/axe?

I really wish they'd make a metalline augment and a good addition to the stone of change (yes, there's a good augment, but it only gives you DR breaking, not extra damage, plus most swords only have one slot).  The game would be so much more fucking interesting and customizable with just those two changes.

Been there, done that.

I had to go back and make Xbows, rapiers, a triple-positive maul and various accessories. I'll likely be back AGAIN making longbows and maybe a set of handwrapss/ shurikens.  Roll Eyes

GS is still the only place to get some crucial effects, like Elemental HP/SP, Displacement Clickies, Con-Op items, and Radiance weapons for no-save Blinding (auto-Sneak Attack on blinded mobs is awesome for Rangers/Rogues).

At least I have the ingredients for it... I pity new(er) players who still need to build their GS. At least most of us crusty veterans pass mats now (although I never leave anything in a chest if nobody rolls on it).

Did this too.
Also, the upgraded Lvl 20 allows me to replace the Animated Rope AND my trusty Red Dragonscale.  Cool

Edited:
Honourable Merntion: I've gotten very good mileage from Cannith Weapons- Greataxe of Fire, Elemental Longbow of Earth, Mournlode Warhammers. YMMV.

I just recently learned that this is 90% true (doesn't break DR, no slot, Fire is a crappy element in most places).

Great weapon, if you can grind enough Abbott completions to win one.  Tongue

Not sure about the other weapons/builds, but I wouldn't bother making GS shurikens.  I have 3 of them and they've just sat in my TR cache collecting dust on each shuri life beyond the one I originally crafted them in.

For DR bypassing, craft a level appropriate Metalline + Aligned returning shuriken with the new Cannith Crafting.

For damage, while a Radiance shuriken sounds nice, on most shuri builds, you don't get enough SA early enough in the game to make it worthwhile.  You're better off using Snowstar with that sweet, sweet crit profile until epics.  With the Improved Crit feat and Deadly Striker (T5 Ninja Spy), Snowstar has a 13-20 crit range.  This easily gets you into epics.

Switch to good Cormyrian Spelltouched or Thunderforged shurikens from 22-26.  LGS to 28 then use LGS or tier 3 TF depending on the situation.

Not that it matters but...there's this thing called auto-complete that makes it insanely easy to put the wrong word when typing on the fly...

I usually catch the mistakes after the fact.

usually =/= always
