Title says it all. A bit surprising to me in that I kinda figured it would limp along forever like DDO. It's still a relatively young game - it came out in 2014!

For those who never played, Wildstar had a LOT of things you might have wished for in DDO, done very well - to the point that things I'm rarely interested in, like crafting and housing, became of interest to me. Also game aspects like no lag, fast loading, lightning-fast updates, customizable UI, extensive addon support, fun/new/interesting game mechanics, pathing, etc. The game was riddled with humor and whimsy.

It was also similar to DDO (or, rather, what DDO was when I played it) in that the player was rewarded for their active combat abilities.

There were four aspects of DDO that it failed to adopt, and those four were the root causes of its downfall (IMO):

1) Itemization. Yet another MMO where you don't even pay attention to the items, you just look to see if the stats are more green or red compared to what you have equipped. I've yet to get excited about any chest in any game I've played since DDO. I'm sorry, but +0.16253 DPS is simply not anywhere near as exciting as "vorpal" or "paralyzing" or "banishing" or "puncturing" (etc.). I think DDO has gone down this road since I left... shame on them if so.

2) Grouping - the fact that DDO essentially forced players to group was an element that both made it great and turned people off. I get it, I often prefer to play games solo... but "MMO" should not translate to "single player game you play simultaneously alongside other people whom you never see." We have single player games for that. This, IMO, was their biggest downfall. I played a couple of characters to cap, and quickly ran into a wall trying to break into endgame: keying required grouping, but there were no PUGs. You basically HAD to join a guild to transition. Which was kind of difficult to do since you hadn't met anyone on your way from level 1 to 50. Which left you with the option of gambling with random guilds that advertise in general chat (you can guess how well that worked out) or leaving. I chose the latter.

3) Variability in Gameplay. Like most MMOs, once you figure out how your class works, combat pretty much becomes pressing buttons 1-8 in a certain sequence, over and over and over. DDO isn't (well, wasn't, at least) like that. You're switching weapons in battle, you're shield blocking, you're running, you're swinging, you're throwing, you're chugging potions, etc etc. Even worse, the gameplay was essentially the same for every single class. I could play any of my characters the exact same way. Go into battle, kite, press 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, repeat until battle over.

4) I can't seem to remember number four, but I'll leave it here as a placeholder for when I do Grin

Do not try the patience of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger.

We are dreamers, shapers, singers, and makers. We study the mysteries of laser and circuit, crystal and scanner, holographic demons and invocation of equations. These are the tools we employ, and we know many things.

The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

#4 for me was the linearity of making a character build.

Your reasons #1-3 very succinctly describe why I've given up on MMO's since DDO & also why I gave up on DDO.

Makes me wonder how on earth SSG are keeping the lights on.

That is a thing. That they cannot find a cheap dev company to take over the game and do some events every two - three weeks.
The company I am working now in used to give some dying games one or two years life, getting some vietnamese guys behind the keyboards.

But I guess they don´t want to give away the code, what is fair enough. The code is surely worth 1 million $, and if you give it to some company in Vietnam or China, they will copy it and sell it for sure.

It has gotten to be more complex than before. SSG has managed to keep Slavers, LGS and Cannith crafting useful while Ravenloft and the new updates add missing pieces which will largely keep the items from becoming obsolete with every new update or two. Strake should check out some of the raid weapons from Ravenloft or the new raid from U40 "Killing Time". They seem to be working back in the vorpal/disruption/banishing properties.

Mostly true. The loot isn't as inspiring creatively as the older loot from the S/S/S era was. And for a brief time, ssg had it right with random loot being able to roll higher attributes than the crafting limit allowed. It made looting chests fun again. Now, 2~ years later? we're back to not even checking chests unless it's named chance.

I don't think naming names would be a good thing for me to do, but I'd pretty much add anyone who's a know-it-all dick on the list. Even if they are sometimes intelligent with their opinions, the way they state them in long, "i'm a lawyer at trial"-type posts makes me want to punch them in the face. They act like whiney babies with god complexes and then freak out if someone so much as breathes criticism in their direction.
