Need a warchanter build for TN halfling
Jul 19th, 2010 at 2:03pm
Print Post
I want to do a lesser Reincarnation of one of my original toons, Tsirio who is a 28pt true neutral halfling spell singer right now.  I want to make him a buffing warchanter first, and melee second.   There must be a basic build out there that I can start with without having to think too much initially?  thx, T

Edit* So, if noone has a specific build could people comment on the value of the capstone and virtues of staying pure class.  The additional +1 to the song bonuses make them +4 seems to be pretty good to me, but the lack of weapons proficiencies of halfling seems a bit limiting...   He's 17 already FYI.  Is there a way to get a resonable support DPS with these limitations?

Gawna is pretty similar to what Hordo posted only I think I maybe went a little less Cha and more Str?  She's dwarf not halfling, though.  I thought about going 2 Fighter because the Warchanter is incredibly feat-starved, but I was able to fit everything in to 20 bard for the +1 song capstone which I liked.  Or should I say Gornn fit everything in because he helped me big time with her build.  Grin

So in order to go full bard I would need to go with either longswords or rapiers/shortswords.  The latter seems better to me.  I guess if I took a fighter level or two I could use Scimitars and kukris...

Gawna uses d-axes with Master's Touch spell.

I think I am going to start with 14 15 16 11 8 12 and assume no +3 tomes or exeptional stat items.  If I actually get any I can just do another lesser to fix the stats to take advantage.  This seems like the most efficient use of build points.

Should I take bets on how long it will be before you reroll as something with more strength and a racial weapon?

I would LOVE to, but this is a 28pt halfling spellsinger, I'm just gonna lesser him to make him useful for raids basically.  I haven't played him since the level cap was 16.  I figure I can lesser him and if he gets to 20 consider a TR...

I don't know if it's an option for ya, but the greater res hearts of wood are on sale  Wink  It would turn your 28pt to a 32pt build.

Can't say I'd choose the TR option though.  I have all kinds of issues getting my 14 warchanter into groups.  Have to stalk the freakin lfm's with him.

I remember a conversation I had with Gawna a few months ago. And it boiled down to

Gawna: "I'm going to do this."

Gornn: Explains why that's a bad idea.

Gawna: "Oh that's much better. Thanks!"

Gornn: "I haven't played DDO for a year, how is it I'm helping you optimize your build?"

Do I seriously need to explain why that stat array is horrible for the build you say you want?

If you're going to go WARCHANTER. You will be expected to fight.

You do not: need intelligence. need charisma.

You do: need as much dex as you have. need as much con as you have.

So since you don't: need charisma or int, and you're good on: dex and con. Where else should those points go? (I know you're thinking wisdom, man. I know that's where you think the extra points should go. But they dont)

You could even buy a 15 strength (13 pts) and keep your int, and then put all 5 level bumps into strength. So you have an even score of 20. +2 tome, +6 item, giving you 28 unbuffed at level 20. Not bad for a halfling.

Or you could gimp him and keep the stats you have.

If you're planning to keep him the way you've proposed, you shouldn't waste turbine points on a lesser reincarnate. He'll be more effective as a spellsinger pure bard.

Because in the 18/2 warchanter breakdown, a pure bard 20 spellsinger is only +1 damage behind. And has more SP for buffing, etc etc.

Why on earth would you take fighter levels to get weapon proficiency when, as Gawna said, you can just cast master's touch?

If you're going to gimp yourself before you even LR, why bother?

Shit, I forgot lvl ups are an odd number. Ok I'll revise.  T

Ok so going from
14 15 16 11 8 12
to
15 15 16 10 8 10

is the difference between an ungodly gimped bard versus Gornnly glory?  So, for +1 to hit and  damage I trade spell points and 7 skill points (with a +1 int tome).  These kinds of differentiations are really absurd.   I'll have to run it through the planner to see how the skill points and enhancements play out
I also don't see how master's touch helps this build at all, for a dwarf sure, that gives DA proficiency.  I guess it would allow me to go scimitar/kukri versus rapier/shortsword... Divine power clickies will be crucial I think.  hmm.. I don't really like the idea of melee bard really.  I thought everyone wanted a warchanter for those songs and DR?  Are you telling me that a spellsinger is just as good?  honestly I'd rather play a spellsinger...  Perhaps people could weigh in on this.  If I go 20 bard would I be essentially just as useful to a raid group as a spellsinger? And, if I go spellsinger healing buffbot does 10 10 16 15 8 16 with all lvl ups into cha and bard cha enh 3 for a final charisma of 32 with a +2 tome?   T

Res options are not equal.. lesser will keep you a 28pt build, greator will make u a 32 pt build.. costs another 100TP, likely worth it.

yeah, I just realized that lessers are still 28pt.  It'll take a bit to finalize what I want to do so hopefully I'll get lucky and hearts will go on sale before I pull the trigger.  T

No. A spell singer is *almost* as good to a raid, in terms of bard songs as an 18/2 warchanter. And it helps in support for healing/SP reduction for clerics and casters.

A 20 warchanter, with melee spec and maxed songs is better than both of those. By a wide margin. Because not only are you contributing to everyone's DPS, you're also getting in there and messing things up in melee yourself.

The realy problem is halfling. Optimally your bard would either be: human (khopesh specced), dwarf (axe specced), warforged (thf specced). I suppose a scimitar specced elf (though the con hit is HUGE since bards don't get that many hp to begin eith) could work as well.

If you're not feeling mixing it up in melee with warchanter, stick with spellsinger. It's not the best choice, but it's serviceable in a raid. It may hurt you in epic though. Based on what I've heard a Divine Power clickie madman bard with max songs and melee contribution is likely more of an asset than a spellsinger.

My bard at level 12 deals as much damage as a fighter of equivalent leve, self buffs, and is currently using the THF style even though he's specced for khopesh/twf. His DPS will improve significantly once I start going down that path.

In the end, play what you like to play. Spellsinger will do fine, but what does it contribute? Max songs/amazing. A little healing, sp cost reduction (which is potentially matched for clerics at least with the DR of a WC)

It isn't as optimal for a raid, but it will do fine.

And as far as my eyes see, not nearly as helpful on epic.

There are many reasons why people prefer warchanters over spellsingers.  I will list them:

Warchanters have higher attack and damage on their songs.

The warchanter-specific song is actually useful even to people who know how to play their characters properly (unlike spellsong).

Bard songs (other than healing and buffs) suck, so there's no reason to have a crap-ton of mana and higher spell DCs.

ALL bards can buff, so to find the best one means that you look for the one who can help when fights break out.  This means warchanters with their melee are better than spellsingers with their.... shout?

Actually, as a halfling warchanter you may want to look into being a healer.  That would allow you to both have the best buffs AND be useful when fighting breaks out.  I haven't given it much thought because it's not entirely optimal from a feat standpoint (why take power attack and weapon focus if you're not fighting), but I've seen others do it with moderate success.

If I stick with Warchanter and go rapier/shortswords piercing spec lvl20 bard.  Songs will be great, DPS ok, I am assuming I should have the UMD to use heal scrolls,  so I could provide secondary healer capacity in a good group that really doesn't require 2 full healers.  So it seems that 15 15 16 X 8 X are set, the question is 12 int 8 cha or 10 and 10.

Here is a quick build out.  looks like 10 int is just fine for skill points, have full cunning and guile and song enhancements, racial toughness and the healing amp for spells.  Actually, it looks like there are plenty of skill points so I could go 8 int and 12 cha to get my UMD up a point higher which is probably more useful than a high diplo... do I need to max out concentration?

No. A spell singer is *almost* as good to a raid, in terms of bard songs as an 18/2 warchanter. And it helps in support for healing/SP reduction for clerics and casters.

with a decent dex, you can even expend 1 feat to use repeaters. a lit2 heavy repeater can help the dps when you party have the required number of healers in the raid

The realy problem is halfling. Optimally your bard would either be: human (khopesh specced), dwarf (axe specced), warforged (thf specced). I suppose a scimitar specced elf (though the con hit is HUGE since bards don't get that many hp to begin eith) could work as well.

whats wrong with halflings? which vet would roll a halfling without guile enhancements?

spellsingers (esp those that are max cha) have among the highest cc DC in the game. its spell song also increases the DC of spells. especially with epic now being nerfed (lower ac needed, lower mob saves, etc), a caster can reliably land mass hold with the help of the spellsong and also help out by fascinating mobs then dancing them
