I imagine the U is Underdark

It seems some guy started a guild on Sarlona called underdark and wanted to get the name DDOunderdark.com for his guild site and found it was already taken by none other than turbine

My fear is that this will not be just a new world but a new game using 4th edition ruleset, basically ddo2, which means I will avoid it like the plague.

The only podcast I ever listened to was the Cocktail Hour, but I only listened to a little bit before I realized I'd rather be playing the game sitting at my computer instead of listening to people talk about a game I like to play.

Something I don't understand -

Cryptic has the FR campaign with the NWN mmo that is slated for later this year.

My guess is Turbine did not want anyone else using "DDO" as part of their website name when associated to an "official" MMO like NWN.

I am thinking no.

The survey I got about a year ago talked about this type of expansion.

Hmm, yes and no, Atari does, and asked Cryptic to design it, then sold Cryptic to PWE.

That reminds me of the Atari debacle in Europe...

Atari sold it distribution subsidiary to NamcoBandai... Hasbro Didn't like it AT ALL.

So the cards are probably changing hands behind the scene.
It wouldn't be surprising to see WB settle an agreement with Hasbro over D&D.
As for the NWN game, we will have to see... I remember a Shadowrun game that was Shadowrun only in name... Just because the rights for Shadowrun Computer games were sold to a studio that then passed hands several times and the game ended as a boring shoot them up.

Anyway time will tell.

Could be, I do not know one way or the other.

Right now those domains all take you to ddo.com.

Guess we will have to wait and see.

It will be interesting to see if they post anything. If this is truly the news, turbine may already be prepping their usual exclusive info nuggets to each site, so they may just stay quiet.

The Underdark is featured prominently in the campaign settings World of Greyhawk and the Forgotten Realms. The concept of a dungeon that spanned a planet was first introduced by Gary Gygax in his D-series of game modules and at the end of the G-series. The Underdark is described in detail in the 1986 manual Dungeoneer's Survival Guide, by Doug Niles. It is also a part of the Eberron campaign setting, in which it is called Khyber and is home to a host of evil beings driven deep into the caverns at the end of the age of demons.

Edit:

Khyber is said to be the body of one of the three Progenitor Dragons that created the world of Eberron. It is a massive subterranean realm that is filled with Devils, Deemons, Daelkyr, nightmarish, and the sleeping Rajah that were bound by the Dragons and the Gatekeepers.

One of the regions of Khyber is the Vault of the Keeper where souls taken by Keeper's Fangs are delivered. There, an ancient Draconic Lich claiming to be the Keeper lords over them and inflicts hellish suffering upon them.

Possible Khyber Overlords (Bosses)

If they are looking to add post 20 levels and game play this would make sense.

It would also explain the xxxdrizzzztxxx dervish enhancements... You can't have Forgotten Realms without thousands of drizzt clones running around with their dual scimitars.

Can you?

Neverwinter is only a small town that was destroyed in books. That's where the game takes over. So it won't be the whole FR world, just 1 small town, probably something following how baldur's gate and/or myth drannor went.

The whole Keeper dracolich ties in with the Abbot story line no? Isnt the keeper referenced maybe by the guy who first gives the shroud quest in Meridia?

the Stormreaver story line references the Stormreaver and the Truthful One a powerful dragon, who together created a powerful spell that would break the link between Dal Quor and Eberron. the price for the spell to work was for each to sacrifice themselves. But the Truthful One couldn't do it all the way and cheated death by becoming a dracolich.
The abbott is referenced in the Meridia in the storyline in reference to the Abbott's death at the hands of adventrurers created such a disturbance in the fabric of the universe that Lammania which is normally coterminous with the Vale of Twilight was knocked askew allowing Shavarrath to also be co terminus. Harry's mission is to make that state permanent so that the devils have a path to Eberron thus setting up the whole Marketplace event.

The Reavers Refuge plot centers around the now defeated reincarnation of the Stormreaver, who has sought refuge with a powerful dragon as it turns out his former underling Sorjek has been resurrected by the Truthful One as a lich with orders to kill dragons and steal their souls and to make him an undead dragon army.
