It's kind of sad that they had intended to put the forums in read-only but can't figure out how. It's clearly been a very long time since Turbine had anyone left that understood how the forum software worked, much less a php dev that could fix myddo.

Easy : it's the cookie that keeps you logged that keeps you allowed to post... as long as the cookie doesn't expire you'll be able to post.
It's only when you need to relog after cookie expiration that the authentication server is queried.
It doesn't take a PhD in CS to know that.

and yes I'm always amazed by the inability of turbine to fix MyDDO when people external to Turbine, with the the piss poor API made public manage to make things much much better and much more reliable ( YourDDO, DDOracle ).

This is fucking mind boggling to me.  I could slap something together in a man month that would work better.  I just don't get it.  The only answer is that it has zero priority, zero resources, and zero personnel attached to the project.   In which case, just take the f'n thing down rather than looking like incompetent assholes.

Well it took me a few hour to set up, from scratch and no previous knowledge in the M and the P part, a SAMP ( Solaris, Apache, MySQL, PHP ) driven forum.
( ok, I cheated on the M part, I have good knowledge of Sybase ]

It had the basic design, but the colors and stuff is mostly fluff compared to setting the thing up.

Now a real challenge : IRC server, with all the perks ( chanserv ).
It took me two weeks to finally manage to install a running one ( with a running chanserv )

No, and the read-only forum thing is just because to post you need to authenticate, and the auth server is (was) down. If you have a persistent cookie, you don't need to reauthenticate, so you don't need the auth server. Nothing to do with "freezing" the forums.
