I got an invite three weeks ago and I haven't even bothered to download the client. This coming from someone who has played Magic quite seriously on and off my entire life. For context, I've played in quite a few Pro Tours; my last being - Battle For Zendikar. However, a few weeks after that tournament I quit playing entirely due to the total infestation of SJW culture in WoTC and Magic itself.

More to your question - I've read and heard the client sucks, but I doubt I'll ever see it for myself.

I rather play mtgonline. and i quit playing mtgo seriously around 2011/12. mostly because the direction of the online game that wotc was going forward with. namely in regards to legacy and vintage formats, which is what i enjoyed playing.

wotc wouldnt drop the costs to make entry for new players easier and my schedule didnt really line up with the times my prefered formats events fired. also those formats are rife with their own problems. there are only really a handful of good decks and brainstorm is in 96% of them. wotc is terrible at balancing and slow to do so since the game is anchored to the paper version. i still have a large collection on the client just gathering dust. spent a pretty penny to acquire every single legacy and vintage deck in existence. around the price of a small brand new small Kia. no idea what it is worth now. i log on few times a year to play some 1v1 edh and that is it.

anyway. rant off.

but if youre going to be playing standard, modern, or drafting then mtgo is the way to go. hands down. those formats fire events around the clock every day. they have leagues as well.

Started playing the Open Beta.  Trying not to spend any money on this... but if you win you move up a level and you face people with perfect Merfolk Decks or perfect White Weenie decks... so you have to Win, then lose 2x, to be able to face someone with crappy basic decks like yours.

And wow, I need to learn the new stuff... people throwing down "sagas"... got to read up on that.

okay.. getting better... apparently you can get new decks (at least for a while... don't know the full setup yet) for playing daily.
Got a new R/G deck yesterday just by playing... will see how long the "new daily decks" continue... says I can get another today... but at work.

Everything wiped when they switched from closed to open, so those people with amazing decks must have paid through the nose for them. It's slow going f2p, you gotta really focus on building one good deck before you build enough resources to branch out.

I think you end up with 6-12 starter decks. They're also doing a thing where you can buy a physical planeswalker deck and enter the enclosed code to redeem all of those cards online.

I'm running a GWB saga deck. Still tinkering with it, maybe I'll post a list later.

There are a ton of people playing aggro, simply because you get stuff for winning, nothing bad for losing, and the games are quick win or lose.

It is worth noting though that the matching algorithm seems to produce a lot more mirror matches than you would expect. So if you switch to a control deck, expect to see a lot more control opponents than you are used to seeing. What deck you are running has a huge effect on what pairings you get. It is not random.

In day 6 of it... got all the free decks... 15 of them... I did Pay $5 for the starter pack (you get 5 packs of the Core Set and about 2400 GEMS)
Through playing daily and getting quest rewards I got 10,000 gold so far and maybe 10 packs (didn't keep up with count).

I used 5000 gold to do a draft event... won 4 games before I lost 3... so I got another pack out of that about 450 Gems.

I got one of those Damned rebate Mastercards from Discount Tire that is a pain to use unless the amount equals the $40 perfectly... that's what I put in for my credit card... too bad they charge tax, otherwise I could have used all up except for about 5 cents.

Now that I have all 15 prebuilts, all those extra packs I opened, along with 13 uncommon, 10 uncommon, 4 Rare and 2 Mythic Rare wild cards, I need to build something better.

Someone posted this mono-blue deck which I can make with all my wildcards.

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/standard-mono-blue-tempo#arena

Like DDO, I'm good with playing someone else's ideas, but I hate spending the time trying to build the deck.  I can take something apart that someone else built and know how it works, but building something from scratch is not my forte.

If you don't want to commit to just having one deck indefinitely, I would spend the mythic and rare wildcards on stuff that you'll get a lot of mileage out of. I grabbed dual lands and Karn first.

I think arena is standard format only? you can see what the better decks in the meta are through a few sites. I used https://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/standard#paper back when I played MTGO.

Be careful. That nostalgic feeling got me when I picked up MTGO around 2009-2011. Thousands of dollars...

Standard format rotates frequently with new sets replacing the older sets. So you will have to buy new packs to keep playing standard. Modern format is a better long term investment, idk if arena has modern.

This is what keeps any nostalgia that might creep in on me well in check.

hahaha.. I got the nostalgia kicked outta me fast.

FFS.  if WotC want to hook you, they should pair you off with others that have basic decks.  The only reason I continued was to cast enough spells to get a starter pack.

the games looks great.  I like it.  but even if I invested my lunch money, not sure I could compete... meh, i'll probably have to give my son my lunch money, anyway...

FYI, right when you start you are only going to have the 5 decks that are single color.
Then on Day 2, you will get a quest to get a 2-color deck.  I think it is just play 1 game, win or lose.
Then on the next 4 days you'll get another 2-color deck until you have 10 total decks.  5 mono color and 5 dual color.

The 6th day you'll get a quest to get the remaining 5 dual-color decks.

It may seem like the people playing against you have really awesome decks during those first 6 days, but those 10 dual-color decks are pretty good at kicking your butt which will be what lots of beginners at Arena will have.

The merfolk deck is annoying out the wazoo to play against, but I pretty much pick it every time for the dailies where I need wins.   Heck, people will concede as soon as they see the first merfolk drop.

The Walk the Plank deck is awesome as well.  Aggro and built-in control.

Another annoying deck to play against is the White-black deck.  That fucking 2/2 cat that gets a counter every time life is gained just is a pain to deal with in the interface.

Keep playing... I've beat the current "Tier 3" netdecks on the internet with Walk the Plank Pirate deck, merfolk etc.  The current meta is AGGRO.  those control deck, unless they have a perfect draw can't keep up with some of the free dual-color decks you are given for free.

Also, just by playing the dailies (and weekly quest) you can get about 10-11 new packs every week from the gold you earn.

Each pack has a chance to have "wildcards" in it, that you can trade for ANY card in the game.  They have Mythic, Rare, Uncommon, and Common wildcards.  And with each pack you open you progress to getting a free Uncommon, Rare or Mythic Rare Wildcard.

I've spent $5 so far (on the beginner "kit" they sell that has packs and GEMS.).

You can definitely grind yourself to a good deck with the wildcards.

Most annoying part is playing the asses who know they have lost, so they start slow playing... there's a timer that makes them play... I assume they are hoping the other person will concede... but there's definitely the population playing that has the stereotypical personality of someone who plays magic.  But with online I don't have to smell the results of the lack of their personal hygiene.

Open Beta is standard only. Closed beta included Amonkhet -> Aether Revolt. So it was like standard+ for a while there with Dominaria in the mix. Also Duels was programmed similarly and went all the way back to Battle for Zendikar and Origins. So I am assuming that they will add in those sets at some point when they want to go beyond standard.

Starting to run into the RDW netdecks published from Tournaments and the White Weenie decks over and over and over.
Gonna get a little boring play those decks over and over.
direct challenge came out today so at least I can play friends from work and not have to deal with that.

It is fun to beat those tourney winners with the pre-built merfolk deck, though.  That deck is just silly good for given away for free.

okay.  after a week of getting the shit kicked out of me, I got all the free decks.
last couple days, I even managed to get on a win streak.

just like DDO, I am terrible at building.  so, I have been looking at budget decks at the link that Rubbinns posted.  of course I am substituting what I can, to avoid coughing up any real dough.
there is a learning curve.  I had never played with Legendary before.. so many new tricks to play!
