Save your set of Wildcards you get as a new player, and keep earning more with gold and the weekly quests.

Research what you really want.  If you get impatient and use your wild cards to buy cards to work your way towards a deck you want, then I think that would be a mistake.  By the team you get all the cards for the deck, the meta may have changed.

Be patient until you know what you really want

Merfolk is probably the most annoying and most common opponent.

saving all my wildcards and gold until new expansion comes out early next year, but was getting tired of playing Merfolks and my Golgari Token deck, so I spent a couple of wildcards to complete the Blue Tempo control deck.

So much fun.  and I get faster wins because once I counter their first spell, many people just concede immediately.

But Merfolk will still kill me, especially if they get to go first.  That deck is just fast and if they got a good draw, just will have too many 3/3 and higher creatures by turn 3.

Anyone else in this? I'm going to download it tonight.

Enjoying MtGArena atm. If MtGO had Arena's UI, i would play MtGO, though.

Milling the hell out of my opponents with my Elf Ball Cheesy. Most fun I have with my Naya Enraged Dinos deck. Eats rats, merfolk and even some Teferis for lunch and is a very successful bo1 constructed event gold farming deck.

Arena kept me away from DDO, too and somehow I don#t miss it... damn.

since the update with the new ranking system, I was able to get to Gold Tier 4 fairly quickly using my Mono-Blue Tempo deck.
This deck is cheap and good against most decks.  However, Merfolk is just too fast with weenie pumped up creatures with synergy.  I hardly ever beat Merfolks unless they just get a crappy draw and I get an almost perfect opening hand.

There was a time in the Legacy format where Merfolk was a tier 1 deck. And the bane of blue control decks everywhere. Around 2012~. Pumped up creatures with Islandwalk, using Aether Vial to cheat them out at instant speed for free while saving mana to counter anything the opponent can do to interact. Also using Wastelands to cripple your mana and turn the soft counters into hard counters. It wasn't out of control though, just really good.

Then The Miracles deck happened. That era was so bad for the format. It was by far the best deck in Legacy with almost no bad match ups. Then Sensei's Divining Top got banned.

Well decided to download it on the wife's computer. Made it to mythic with mono white. Teferi decks keep kicking my ass, but if i get a good draw I can get them before they can set up.

There are some awesome cat decks to be made when they bring Amonkhet back into the game.

Dinos are still fun, I don't care what anyone says.

Yeah my white deck plays like agro but has enough to hang in until late in the game. If I don't get the teferi down fast enough I just wait and wait until the make the mistake of letting me have 1 cast and hit them with the fall of thran, destroys all lands, then I can usually finish them off.

An optimal start is healers hawk, then ajanis pridemate, then a couple of the little cats that heal at the start of combat.

Or, Novice night, followed by knights pledge, that one really puts people on the ropes quick.

just been grinding daily quests to build up gold for Jan 17th new release... up to 43K gold, 20 something commons and uncommon wildcards, 12 Rare and 10 mythics... figure with about 50 Packs bought via gold, I'll be able to make 1 or 2 good "netdecks" out of the gate.

I'm not sure getting the deck is the hard part.  It's having the time to play that much to get to mythic and then top 8.  You'd have to have literally no life and probably be high on the autistic spectrum... you know, like 90% of MTG players.  Smiley

I just can't compete with them.  I have a life and I shower everyday and wear deodorant.

I think I'd do this if I could use my RL collection. But then again, I'd miss the friends I used to play with, so maybe I'd still wind up without enough interest to keep up.

Friend from invited me to go to a Release Event several years ago with him.  an overcrowded Hotel small convention room reeking of BO and nerd-stench.

funniest thing was this one kid (probably 16-18) brought his girlfriend who dressed in a cheerleader outfit and sitting on his lap until right before the event started.  I just imagine his thought process was "I am a god among the nerds"

I haven't played magic since I was a kid and we used my buddy's cards he nabbed from his dad. I won my first 3 matches in a row and then proceeded to lose 4 in a row. Are the basic decks complete shit? How much dough do I need to shell out to get a decent deck do ya think?

Quote:
The model behind MTG Arena is that you can pay as much or as little money as you want into the game, depending on what your goals are. If you just want to jam competitive tier one Constructed decks immediately without any wait, then you'll have to invest a decent amount initially into booster packs to gain the cards and wildcards you need to build the decks. If you don't mind grinding your way into a collection, then you don't have to invest much – or any – into the game, depending on how long you're willing for the process to take.

Standard meta for arena : https://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/arena_standard#paper

Interesting thing about the arena ladder. 1 game only, which means no sideboarding and you want to win the die roll to go first. No sideboards gives a big advantage to combo decks.

Here is a magic pro's take on how the best of 1 rule will affect the meta.

Merfolk are probably the most potent starter deck. You can make that into a top tier aggro deck with very little work.

You can choose to do best of 1 or best of 3 for the ladder now.

Of course if you're serious about ranking up, you'll want to optimize for best of 1 since it's faster. But if you prefer best of 3, the option is there.
