Why do I suddenly get this real bad feeling this is an excel spreadsheet filled with VBA somewhere?

More like the number of small businesses I've done consulting for that had an "App" which turned out to be a weird kludge of an Excel sheet that was doing massive VBA backends to various sheet pages of "flat" file entries in lieu of using even an Access Database that is generating some "business" critical report or process or even mail merge list that suddenly broke and is throwing a woody. One who's original author was super taleneted with VBA but not a real programmer and used all those really annoying shortcuts in VBA to make the code as unreadable as possible and compact that decrypting it takes far more than that it should. I've run into those damn things far too often over the years and that whole recipe line reminded me of that kind of attitude I see and given the treatment I have seen Turdbine/SSG take to some of their systems work....

Sev just posted an underwhelming Producer's Letter.

Quote:
Greetings! I’m excited today to share a look at our 2019 road map, featuring a new expansion, new quests, a new race, and more! DDO enters its 13th year with a passionate player base and a development team dedicated to making DDO great, and it couldn’t be done without you.

You've known about our plans for an expansion into Sharn for a while now, and last week we were able to start sharing more information with you, including the debut of our first Sharn-related preview material to our public preview server, and an announcement that we will begin accepting preorders for Masterminds of Sharn in March. Bookmark ddo.com/mastermindsofsharn to make sure you have the latest information.

We intend to follow up Sharn with a new adventure pack set in the City of Towers, but you won’t need the Sharn expansion to run these quests. Update 43’s adventure pack set will be free to VIPs (and Season Pass holders). Update 44 will introduce our next new class as well! More information about what this class will be is under wraps for now, but we will have much more to share later this year.

Update 45 will arrive later in the year as well, and feature our next classic adventure pack. We don’t feel it would B2 early to talk about it, so we’re pleased to announce that Keep on the Borderlands will offer a new experience for players adventuring at the lower levels of the game. The classic pack will also feature several other dungeons, similar to what we did with White Plume Mountain and Other Tales.

Some other things we are hoping to do this year is to work on Epic Destinies, with a few targeted changes per destiny along with additional work to Knight of the Chalice, and the debut of a new racial variant!

As always, we are honored to be the place where you enjoy the most authentic Dungeons & Dragons experience in video gaming, and we will continue to work hard to earn your patronage.

Sev~

Or basis, in fact, it would seem. Since Sev showed up on video and in the letter our young aspiring panic merchant seems to have retreated into the shadows to repair his tin-foil hat and no doubt begin more of his deep employee research and industry deduction of SSG's future on linkedin.

What did you expect ?

It's just what has already been discussed for months to death, no surprise... the only tiny bit of information is the order of occurence of the various parts.

Yeah, there is something up that is causing Sev to hold back particulars.   In addition to other conspiracy theories, there could a dependency on Sharn sales and pre-sales.  And there remains the lingering weirdness of the season pass....

Managed expectations. Too many particulars means you are inevitably going to miss a target date or scrap a presented idea. And since they are accustomed to being ragged on each time that happens...

I can't figure out why you were.  Have you read the 3 years previous ones?   There is no detail.  The 2016 one said nothing.  The 2017 one talked about Stonelands adventure pack that never happened and Ravenloft in no detail and Reaper in limited detail.  The 2018 one mentioned Disciples of Rage, briefly, and talked about WPM and sentient jewels.   None of them were big on details.

It's not a sudden change.   It is business as usual.   It's part of why so many forum posters were befuddled by the dozen or so threads from Jan 1 to Mar 4 kvetching about a producer letter and what it means that it is so late.

Like it or not, you will know more about the direction of the game if you watch the live streams and dev interviews on podcasts.  That's where the best info comes from.

You would have a better case if this wasn't a trend going back 4 years now (including this one).   Maybe it doesn't mean anything more than they just don't have too much to say given that they have already talked about the biggest thing in 2019.  Sharn.   Maybe it is as simple as it is an annual tradition that previous regimes/companies started that they don't like but feel obligated to do due to player expectations.

Honestly, given that both Ravenloft and Sharn were announced outside of a producer's letter, it is clear that they don't hold news about the game direction to release in the letter.  Making it a necessary event.  They just release news throughout the year as it makes sense for them.  Given that, it's not really something that holds any special value.

Well, you see the glass half-full, I see it as a fucked up jelly jar that is hard to drink from.  That letter was really short and vague considering Cordo talked about it back in December.  Maybe it's simply a low priority for Sev, but again, the season pass, Daybreak, layoffs, and a delayed producer's letter for no apparent reason based on the content of it, is worth a speculation or two.

Ok.  If you can compare it to the 2016,2017, and 2018 ones and tell me how it differs so greatly.  As far as I can tell it is the same level of detail we have been getting.

As far as I can tell, nothing has changed content wise.  It's the same as always.   Not sure what you are looking at and saying "OMG this is different than the last several years.  Somthing has changed."

I'm still not getting the stress around the Season Pass, either.  A business wanted to make money so they released a new product offering.   They used a limited quantity/limited time to create a sense of urgency.   Um...OK?   Sounds like something every business ever tries to do.   Kind of what they are supposed to be doing.

The better question is:  Why are there not more new ideas to generate revenue being done?   Why not have a Winter Cosmetic Pack that is only available for 2 weeks every year with some cool winter themed cosmetics and maybe a special item that does some glaciation stuff or a weapon effect etc.  Kinda like what you can make with the event, but different and only available through the purchase.  Limited quantity.   I mean, it's not rocket science.   Other games are doing it.  Do the same around halloween.  Do the same around Pirate Day.   Create a "Dragon Day" as a fake annual "Event" and sell a Dragon Themed Equipment Pack.   Limited time.  Limited quantity.   Why the fuck not?   Sell shit.  It's the entire reason a business exists.   I just don't get the hand wringing about it.

High quality art cosmetics would sell the fuck out. Look at what PoE does. You can turn your character into what looks like a raid boss. People pay hundreds of dollars for cosmetics there.

The season pass on it's own was weird, however if they wanted to boost the overall server logins for some reason, that would do it... My guess is that a significant number of pass holders now log onto most of the servers on a daily basis, whereas they probably only logged onto one or two before.

High Quality Art is one of the most expensive things to create individually in an MMO.
SSG seems to have recently brought in some motivated individuals that are working to up the ante for DDO.   See the 13 House Cloaks.  I wouldn't be shocked to see more cosmetics, but not until after the expansion.

Agreed.   This has been the untapped revenue stream that SSG is only in the past 18-24 months been accessing.   I hope it continues.

That and storage and QoL stuff.   They could make a mint selling stuff that doesn't affect power level at all but makes the game more fun to play.

(While I know you already know this, I'm simply quoting to add a little bit of my opinion.)

And that's the kicker. High quality. POE simply kills it when it comes to cosmetics. "Good enough" is SSG's mantra. (But hey, when you have whales who scoop up whatever they create, regardless of quality, then declare it the best thing since sliced bread, that's what you end up with.)

They also have it set up so it doesn't obliterate your inventory. Having a completely separate cosmetic tab where you can cycle through what you own on any character allows it to shine.

They need to improve storage for cosmetics if they want to leverage that revenue stream.

People also pay hundreds of dollars there to reward a business model they believe in. I'm one of them. I don't really care about the cosmetics I get (though they do look awesome) much beyond the fact that they advertise that I love how GGG runs the game and I want to support them.

I used to give DDO money weather I needed the points or not, because I believed they would use my money to make the game better. I've since learned better, and intend to be as vocal in withholding my support from DDO as I am in offering it to PoE.

Until SSG stops being such dicks, the fanbois can support them, I'm giving my money to GGG.

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

Dear players,

The D&D rules you were familiar with were too simple to understand, so we're continuing our move away from them to needlessly confusing subsystems that will make your play experience less fun and invalidate old builds and loot. We hope you have fun working out what the fuck MRR, PRR, MP, SP, RP, CL, MCL and all the other bullshit we made up whilst drunk means.

Love,

Agreed. But they do look awesome. Go to any public zone and see all these crazy looking characters running past you is just great. Things like that that add to the atmosphere just make so much sense. Even the smaller pieces that change the look and only go for 5-20 bucks are great there.
