All you can control is how you play and if you spend
Which is why I don't play HCL.

Hard to find good MMO's without the fetch/kill/courier quest mechanic ad nauseum.
Even DDO is not without examples of this mechanic. Unless you're playing some kind of lobby game, its pretty much inescapable.

And with build variety depth.
Yeah. That is SUPER hard to find sadly. The real problem is fucking WoW. Thanks to fucking WoW, every single game that's come out since(with the exception of niche games like DDO) has heavily featured PvP as the primary selling point. PvP eats build depth and variety for breakfast. We need all the esports 'tards to get the fuck over themselves so we can start to see none-PvP games again.
Probably never going to happen -_-

And with active combat.
Whats your definition of "active"? I like DDO's twitch-style combat a hell of a lot. Have tried out a couple of "action" MMOs and hated every single fucking second of it. Unfortunately like PvP, "action" MMOs have also become the norm(despite, somehow, WoW not being an "action" MMO, but WoW doesn't have twitch either).

If I could find one with those 3 things, I would give it a try for sure.
Keep me posted if you find it.

Technically, that's Mabinogi.
God fucking damnit. Lol. Guess I know what I'm reinstalling this weekend. I really could not "get into" it but the visuals really spoke to me.
