Item deletion (and EDs!!!) makes the actions personal against the player in a way that a ban never could. Just the idea of some GM pawing his way through your character's stuff and removing XP is going to bother many people. It's called a proportional response. 14 day bans + removal of duped items and ings is a proportional response to what the dupers did. Removal of legitimately earned items is not. Overreacting makes them look small and petty.

Yeah, ultimately it's Turbine's game and they can do whatever they want, BUT heavy handed tactics drive people away and make enemies in a way that Turbine just can't afford to do.
