How does this work? Do I just copy everything over and run from there, or do I have to install to the flashdrive?

Also, is using a flashdrive faster, or can I use a portable harddrive?

After updating via pyLOTRO, it no longer loads DDO

So here goes some testing

DDO updated and run once then closed.

netsession_win.exe process found running.
Restarted computer
netsession_win.exe process found running.

Where does it start from? HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run                  
Name of infection? Akamai NetSession InterfaceAkamai NetSession Client      Akamai Technologies, Inc.      c:\documents and settings\[user]\local settings\application data\akamai\netsession_win.exe

Simple enough. Disable it from running on start up.

Start DDO. It reinstalls Akamai.

OK then. Let it start, we'll block it in the firewall.

Akamai wants to reinstall itself. But now it can't connect to the interwebs so it locks up. Remove firewall block and DDO starts up again normally.

So pretty much Akamai NetSession Client is behaving like ransomware except that we don't have to pay. It's still virus-like in behaviour. We MUST have it and it MUST be running if we want to play DDO.

So we can't just uninstall it. Can't disable it. Can't block it. What's the solution? It's actually pretty simple.

Two batch files.

First named Start.bat Contents below.

Second file named Kill.bat Contents below.

TASKKILL /F /IM "netsession_win.exe"

Pretty simple really. Make the batch files, then run Start.bat. Next start up DDO and when it gets to the login you can run Kill.bat

Of course netsession_win.exe will still run on startup unless you remove it. You can run Kill.bat shortly after starting your computer or find a way to remove it. I won't assist with that here.

I re-installed pylotro and it works fine now. I updated via alternate means though.

I don't know what to tell you guys. I hit Patch under the tools menu, it ran like 10/15 minutes hit exit once it was done.

Put in my username & pw, login, then got to character select screen picked a toon & loaded into the harbour on Orien, no problems. Shrugs.

My Linux Mint PC can update via PyLotRO and play no problem. The Windows 7 version updates but then does not run. I'm going to try copying over the files from the Mint box to the Win box and see if that helps.

And trying to defeat the crapware is actually more fun than the game right now, so more playing settings tomorrow.
