I'd point out that I. Nov of 2012 NCsoft shut down city of heroes and refused to consider selling it because they did not want to create a potential rival out of a former product. Paragon studios entire team was fired. COH saw profit that year in excess of 7 figures and one of its best earning periods in its history. It had a solid active subscriber base of nearly two hundred thousand players at the time of the announced intent to shut down. It was shut down simply because its umbrella NC soft want to change direction away from western MMO or so was said.

So if you think with the announced intent to direct turbine to mobile games there is even a chance in the nine hells that WB will pay Hasbro for continued rights to DDO or lotro your higher then this life long pot head. Cheesy

Only 8 years late, good Turbine, good. You surely will do well in the market. There is only a fuckton of better companies there, with more money and more everything.

You forgot the part about how full of fresh, original, and innovative ideas the Turbine crowd is!  Just look at their recent quest offerings.

Let's see, there was that most recent Mabar festival.  Um, no, they just re-used other quest maps and inserted other mobs with more hp.

Um, oooh, Good Intentions?  Oh, another map rehash.

Memoirs?  No, chunks of several different quests in there.

Oh, I know! Gnomes!! That was some original use of the halfling code with a shrunk down dwarf face.  Yes, very original.

Yep, they will have no problem breaking into that market by ripping off another company's work.

So is it actually common knowledge how long the current license goes on?

If they shitcan the game instead of going into Maint mode, that is going to generate some animosity and kill the game overnight.

Once people know there is no future at a specific time in the near future, then there is no point in doing anything - including spending money on it.

As such, my bet is the fuckers won't tell us more than a few weeks out.

Another possible clue for several months now since I'd guess the time of the big ten I've noticed that when going to the official forum I get warned their security certificate is out of date and unsafe.
Now this isn't the first time in DDOs history this has happened but I don't ever recall them leaving for months. Roll Eyes

Meh.  They would probably issue refunds on any recent subscriptions purchases if they were doing a shut down in the immediate/short term.  Not sure about TP purchases.

When COH shutdown was announced I had 9 months left on a year subscription. They only offered to transfer it to other games they owned and simply stopped peoples ability to pay for points.

They wouldn't even offer something like a copy of guild wars two which I think nine months worth of sub is at least equal to. No refund no actual new product just put it towards something of theirs you already owned.

So disgusted was I that I didn't even accept it and put it on my books for GW1 since I had everything g for it already. Its why I no longer buy or play any NC Soft product even though by all accounts GW2 is a solid mmo because MMO are all money pits. Not one in history has ever actually released enough content as part of regular updates to justify the total cost. Just compare touch better quality gamesade with modding in mind like fallout three and four or the elder scrolls or dragon ages. The free mods out there well done and well rated by sites like nexus make any one who spends a 100$  or more on a single game into poor spenders at best. Because no MMO is actually quality compared to any game released at the same time be it graphics lack of bugs or content.

That seems to be a self-contradictory statement.  If they shitcan the game, then there will be no maintenance mode, and they will have themselves killed the game overnight.

I wouldn't read too much into that.  A certificate is cheap in the grand scheme of company expenses, not renewing it is more an indication of incompetence than insolvency or plans to shut down.  They'll still need a certificate for their corporate website and for whatever crappy mobile games they hope to develop, after all.

Well you can always sue.  The DDO license claims to absolve them of all responsibility, but then goes on to say something like their total compensation can't be more than the amount paid out across the past six months.  It's a bit like pissing in the wind, and they know it, because the time and effort you'd have to put in would be more than the amount you figured you had due.

That said, you can flip the script and win, if you are persistent.  I had given notice to a company I worked for and then was fired for no reason.  I'm in a 'right to work' state, which doesn't mean what it sounds like.  It means that I can be fired because the boss doesn't like the tie I'm wearing, and it's legitimate.  And I didn't care, I was moving to a higher paid position and they wanted me right away, so it was convenient in a way.   But they decided to withhold my last month's commission.  So I took them to court, and had my lawyer issue subpoenas for testimony to all of the officers, my manager, his manger, a few HR personnel, and several of my co-workers.  And a pile of documentation, such as all of my stellar yearly reviews, work history, HR records, pay records, anything that might conceivably be relevant.

They must have figured that the time spent away from the office and spent on producing and defending the documents would cost them less, and settled by paying up including my legal expenses to that point.  All it cost me in the end was time.

So you can win, but only if you both take the time and make it entirely inconvenient for the company you are suing.

There's the rub. I'm not sure anybody at Turdbin is smart enough or cares enough about the company to take this into account, but closing a game in a shitty way is a great way to make sure the customers so screwed will never again spend a cent on one of your products. Even customers not screwed will hesitate to trust the company, people learn from the bad experiences of their friends.

So I guess if WB wants Turbine to get out of the nasty, messy, MMO business, their safest bet is to give Severlin free reign and let him continue to whittle the player base down to zero in a way that leaves the customers and their friends sad and possibly angry with one person, as opposed to pissed off at the whole company.

So if anybody there is smart enough to figure that out, yes, things will continue "as is" for DDO and LOTR, and they will die of attrition not a coup de grâce  Roll Eyes (but I'm still not spending any more real cash until I see persistent evidence of a truly improved approach to managing the game)

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

LOL, nice! Beat them at their own game  Grin

And you got the satisfaction of knowing they paid a penalty (lawyers' fees) for being jerks. Yeah, that whole "right to work" is a great name, it's like calling that barren strip of ice "Greenland". Such a simple trick, and yet it fools so many people, over and over again, throughout history.

Fuck that sounds so spot on someone should post it in a more refined way on the mobo's.

I would but im 1 infraction away from the banhammer.  And will be perma banned when my account defaults to f2p.
I will prob throw em a few bucks for a pack of points to keep my mobo account from being banned though.

Or you can just take a $20 out of your wallet and set it afire. Produces the same effect.

Naw burning the bill it still can be used as tinder in a camp fire or wiping ones ass with it still makes it useful far more then spending it on any MMO. Me I'm a gamer with a library of games I enjoy replaying every few years. An MMO no matter how much you spend on you never own and it can be taken from you as if you are but a child with a dickhead stepdad

Anyone spending money on DDO since the announcement of the production of Infinite Crisis would have been better setting their money on fire.

I still can't believe how hard Turbine failed at such a simple job with that game. It's been over a decade since I've read a DC comic, yet I could create a dozen different templetes of DC characters without creating something as stupid as SoCal Hal -

Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age, New 52, Gaslight/Victorian Age, Bizarro, Last Laugh, Kingdom Come, etc. There's so much source material that could be farmed out of the DC property before dumbass ideas like SoCal Hal should even be a thought bubble.

To be fair though, dumbass ideas are a tradition in comics. SoCal Hal can stand proud alongside the most stupid comic book characters of all time.

One of such lists.

The 10 Dumbest Superheroes Ever Conceived

Quote:
10) Squirrel Girl — Marvel Comics
Even the name sounds stupid. Squirrel Girl was a super heroine who was supposedly based on one of the creator’s ex-girlfriends. I know this might shock you, but Squirrel Girl’s powers centered around all things squirrel. She dressed like a squirrel, and she could talk to and control legions of squirrels (talk about getting the short end of the superhero stick!) Squirrel Girl runs around with a squirrel sidekick called Monkey Joe. Squirrel Girl eventually became a member of the Great Lakes Avengers – but once other superheroes stopped laughing at her “powers” she was relegated to being the nanny of another superhero. Yes that’s right, she was so bad Marvel turned her into a nanny. From a crime-fighting heroine to changing the diapers of a super-baby, talk about a demotion.

9) The Red Bee — DC Comics
Red Bee is a superhero who controls bee swarms and uses a “stinger gun” to thwart criminals and Nazis. As far as superheroes go that’s pretty lame, but it gets worse. Red Bee’s favorite little bee-friend lives inside his belt-buckle. He’s named Michael and Red Bee only lets him out under “special” circumstances. This sounds like it’s an afternoon special waiting to happen, but it is in fact true. DC Comics rightfully killed off this highly unpopular character. That was good. Unfortunately, they re-envisioned the Red Bee and allowed the Red Bee’s grandniece to don the suit and continue the legacy of spreading pollen all over the world (or whatever it is she does now.) Luckily for her, the new Red Bee eventually becomes some sort of kick-ass hybrid insect/superhero lady. Guess that’s something at least.

8) Vibe — DC Comics
Look, there was a time when we were, shall we say, a bit less sensitive to the stereotypes we imposed upon others, and Vibe isn’t the last one of these awfully offensive superheroes to make the list, though he might be the least offensive of the offensive. So who is Vibe? He’s better known as Paco Ramon, a street tough and gang leader on Detroit’s mean streets who suddenly gives up his thuggish life of crime to become part of the Justice League. Oh, did we mention that poor Ramon could generate dangerous and powerful shock waves? Well he could. Vibe didn’t hang around long and was eventually killed off. But don’t worry, he was re-animated and died again, and in 2013 DC Comics decided that the world would be a better place with superheroes like Vibe, so they brought him back.

7) The Almighty Dollar — Marvel Comics
Poor J. Pennington Pennypacker (an accountant by trade) just wanted to attend a self-esteem camp. How was he to know it was run by a mad scientist who would concoct strange experiments on him and turn him into the superhero known as the Almighty Dollar? Next time Pennington might want to choose a better self-esteem camp because he didn’t gain the ability to fly or punch through walls. Oh no, Almighty Dollar ended up with the awesome capability of shooting pennies out of his wrists. The bad news is that this will likely end up with him being killed by some pissed-off super villain when he starts shouting out things like, “here’s your change!” On the plus side, he would have been pretty popular at those penny candy dispensers you used to find in local supermarkets.

6) Extrano — DC Comics
We don’t even know where to start. For the record, Extrano was created in 1998, which might say a little something about our perception of AIDs and the rising acceptance of homosexuality at the time. Oh, and apparently it was also a really important time for magicians. Extrano is a gay Hispanic magician superhero and a part of the Guardians of the Universe. More importantly, Extrano is basically the most stereotypical “gay” superhero ever created – and not in a good way. He negatively personifies the stereotype in every way from his clothing to his language, and he probably set straight-gay relations back twenty years all by his lonesome. He calls himself “Auntie,” shoots fire from his hands, could levitate and even performed magic tricks to distract his opponents. Eventually DC Comics forced Extrano to find a magic relic which made him a bit less effeminate – but that might be even more of an offensive comment on how we view homosexuals.

4) Night Thrasher — Marvel Comics
Tell me if you’ve heard this story before. A child witnesses the death of his wealthy parents at the hands of a criminal. Spurred on by revenge, and lacking super powers, he uses his fortune to transform himself into a martial arts warrior and crime-fighting machine in a black super-suit. No, this is not the story of Batman. It’s the history of the superhero known as Night Thrasher. While there may be some (some???) similarities here, things tend to diverge a bit from this point onward. Sure Batman has his batmobile and batarangs, but Night Thrasher rides around on a skateboard and fights crime with badly executed martial arts moves that don’t really make any sense. Marvel has since re-booted Night Thrasher, but we’re not convinced he can overcome his lame beginnings.

3) Skateman — Pacific Comics
Maybe Skateman should be higher on this list. After all Skateman #1 was voted the worst comic of the past 25 years in 1990. How bad was Skateman? They only ever made one issue of it. Skateman was created by Neal Adams in 1983, which apparently was a big time for roller skates. Billy Moon (Skateman’s alter ego) was a Vietnam Veteran and a martial arts enthusiast (of course he was) who returned home from the wars and began a career in roller derby (seems logical.) Barely recovered from the war, Moon’s best friend is murdered by bikers. So Moon does what any of us would do – he wraps a scarf around his head, dons his skates and goes on a vigilante rampage. We can only assume Skateman was captured and killed by the very bikers he was attacking, though there’s a good chance he just chased a bad guy down some sort of incline, got stuck at the bottom and was never heard from again.

2) Arm-Fall-Off Boy — DC Comics
Arm-Fall-Off Boy’s sole super power was to detach his arms and use them as weapons. That’s it.  Unlike most superheroes, Arm-Fall-Off Boy doesn’t make many appearances in the comics. He tried out for the Legion, but was rejected. He’s such a senseless character that we don’t even know what to write about him. He doesn’t even have a back-story to make fun of.

1) Codpiece — Vertigo Comics
And you thought Extrano was a bad idea. Codpiece was created by someone who probably had a lot of issues with women, but no one knows who because no one has the balls to stand up and take credit for this phallic masterpiece. Codpiece was a normal dude with a few “insecurities” about his height (yeah, lets go with that) and how he was treated by women. So, to get his revenge, Codpiece devised and built the most extreme pair of cannon-pants ever concocted and went out to be a bad dude. He eventually died at the hands of Coagula – a transsexual prostitute superhero that probably should have made this list. Codpiece might be the most stunningly stupid idea ever devised by a comic book writer. Worse, they went and made toys of this character and sold them to children. There are only about twenty offensive things going on with this dude.

May have something to do with them converting characters into more PC types I recall hearing something about them wanting to make hal by sexual or even full on faggy ass sissy boy though personally I thought kyle Rainer would of been the ideal lantern to do that to.

They just need the people behind the Lego Movie to do it.

The Kobold that Jumped Ship Before Getting Fired still lurks around, from time to time he gives us bits of wisdom about what occurs(ed) internally at Turbine.
A Ding just means that you've been spot on in one of your quoted comments.... Nothing more, nothing less.

Sorry to deflate your head swell before it starts.  Cheesy

I don't think naming names would be a good thing for me to do, but I'd pretty much add anyone who's a know-it-all dick on the list. Even if they are sometimes intelligent with their opinions, the way they state them in long, "i'm a lawyer at trial"-type posts makes me want to punch them in the face. They act like whiney babies with god complexes and then freak out if someone so much as breathes criticism in their direction.
