No boobs... just a question.

How does SotEP work? Does it apply to base damage before criticals? Or does it add a separate SA damage? If it adds to base, it's the obvious best Scion out there for a melee/ranged. If it's just SA damage, then it's pretty much only for Dex builds.  Am I right?

Adds to sneak attack.

Works best for Dex builds, but any can benefit.

Big benefit is to classes that scale SA damage and SA often. 100 pts before scaling by ranged power is amazing on even first life capped toons.

Arborea is the best all purpose melee/ranged scion feat. If you're not sure, go with that.

Ethereal is sneak attack, so it scales with 1.5x ranged power and depends on how high you can jack up your hide score. I'm projecting 190ish hide on my thrower build when I get it maxed out, so yeah, it works.

From last year, with all the new gear I could get it higher these days.

Quote:
Human DWS ranger, lv 30, running in LD, or whatever, not dependent on a specific ED, but I do enjoy the Blitz range power so I run with that most of the time currently.

23 ranks in hide
10 Epic ranks hide
5  Skill tome
3  DWS, stealthy
1 Rogue past life, sneak of shadows +1 all skills
5 Epic hide
3 Ship buff Danger room, +3 hide
5 Hiding in plain sight, ranger lev 17
15 twist, in the weeds
10 Camouflage spell, circumstance
4 Ghostly, enhancement available various items, I use TF armor for some reason only gives +4
4 Greater heroism
22 Competence
11 insightful
6 Quality
20 Shadow cookies, from my stock of 4k, +20 untyped buff.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
147 base
+
23  Dexterity stat bonus, Dex at 57
--------------------------------------------------------------------
170 normal rolling around
+
30 Sneak of Shadows past life, 3 X day at 1 min run time
---------------------------------------------------------------------
+4 Scion of Ethereal
204 For special heavy use

Currently I'm banging around with a 167/197 because I'm not sold on paying for that last 6 quality in Tier III and I keep forgetting to load my Imperial blood.

Now I could go higher,

Consumables; I could use tensors, and Hezrou cookies, for more dex but I like to cast (so screw hezrou) and casting tensors gets on my tits pretty quickly, whereas chowing on the shadow cookies gives me the +20 hide, and 25% incorp, and I don't have to unequip my bow to eat it. So I use them, an additional benefit is the cosmetic change of the toon when I'm using the shadow cookies, I see the toon change back the moment they run out instead of tracking the tooltip at the top of the pages so I tend to keep shadow running a lot more consistently.

Gear; I could squeeze in a +4 guild aug but waiting until after Cannith pass to look at that, I have skullduggery kit with +10 dodge which I do use from time to time, but it and the Manual of S.P. seem like wasted slots on my Ranger so I dont.

ED's; I usually run in LD, EA, or Crusader.  As far my sacrificing  use of ED's for this build I only use one twist for this build, that's it. At end game I can easily afford the one twist even a lev 4 twist. I could twist in SD's stealthy for another +6 but I tend to use my other slots to bump my Arcane Arrow's DC numbers, and use the last for utility. The +6 isn't worth it right now but I could add it.

Stats; I could definitely push my dex higher with Enhancements and feats but I tend to put my tree points into buffing my Wis for DC, and only use the level ups for Dex, so I kind of split the difference to keep the toon from being too one-sided.

So with all that I could buff up to a theoretical 234, but at that point it would have affected DPS, so why bother.

Keep in mind that it's still giving out 50% of hide, not the 30% the nerfers cried for.

So it's not working as intended?

If it is giving out +1 for every 2 points of hide, that might be worth taking on a dex build. I couldn't justify +1 for every 3 points of hide on any kind of build. I wouldn't use cookies, twists, and other random modifiers just to make the feat somewhat respectable. Let's hope they keep it the way it is now.

That's how it's working, it's even listing the bonus in the combat log as well. Hard to believe huh? almost a year of it and it hasn't broken the game and people have moved onto other things to cry about. 1 for 2 makes some pretty varied and interesting builds viable.

Isn't that what good design is supposed to do even if it is often the result of accident rather than intent?  Huh

A lovely thing.
I was crying for a nerf but you know that all that's left on the monos is yards.
No conception of game balance when rangers are running around doing more DPS than barbarians in large part thanks to a fucking silly feat.
But this is afucking silly fucking game.fuck de calice

The funny thing is very few rangers use it on live, much less ranged ones. It really only shows up in rogue or rogue splashes even though it could help so many different kinds of builds. After a year of play it's pretty safe to say that  really there wasn't a need to nerf it, just a bunch of theory-builders worried about something they would never actually have the patience to run.

What would be even more amusing is if the actual effect was according to the text, and the combat log was in error.

The combat log is a sad fuck story, after all.  Only Mookie could love something so very limited.

It's a shame that there's not a way to get unlimited SA range on anything but a pure ranger.

Thanks for the breakdowns, yardarm and 5FootStep.  I don't normally play a lot of stealth based characters.  I've got some rogue and ranger PL's still to get though.  I think I'm going to look into doing something with this.
