Good question.
Here's the breakdown for how I read him, some reasoning superficial, some not:
+1 for being verbally adept
+1 for having a British accent (no better way to fool Americans)
+1 for irrational confidence
-1 for polarizing
-1 for having frosted hair, a large chain, and a trump shirt - in other words, for trying very, very hard to appear young, alternative, and hip
-1 for being smug and self-congratulatory
-1 for the event being a Horowitz Foundation circle jerk with members of Breitbart
Average.
I worked for the David Horowitz Freedom Center years ago while desperate and in between jobs. "Indoctrination by liberal campuses" was a key point for them, even a decade ago. California campuses are mostly liberal, so I understand some of their gripes, but this seems less like a call for change than a rallying of the troops. At some point we make politics a battle of who is victimized more by the opposing party, which is not particularly productive, in my opinion. It does get asses in the seats, however, and there are speaking fees and donations to the "non-profit" organization to consider.
My preference is for well-tempered argumentation where both sides are represented.
This event, by the way, was part of the "David Horowitz Restoration Weekend." It is $1,750 for individuals, $2,750 for couples, and then there are bronze, silver, gold, and platinum levels that go up from there (platinum is $20,000). Make no mistake, this is an organization that makes its money by polarizing and raising the political stakes.
