Words have different meanings when used in various context. The word 'retard' for example is used to denote people with impaired mental development. Alternatively, it can be used to describe other people who merely exhibit impaired mental development. Another example, the word 'gay' means someone who is happy. Alternatively, it can also be used as slang for someone who is transgender, homosexual, or bisexual - often in a derogatory fashion.

So, in context, calling someone gay and retarded can be interpreted as an incredibly happy person with vitamin D deficiency. Or it can mean other things.

So, if you are not taking supplements, chances are that you are deficient... and even if you are supplementing, you can be due to poor absorption and factors relating.

There has to be a certain level reached. Of note, the study in Hawaii (note the authors!) stating that, at the present "normal" values, even adequate sun exposure does not appear to have "adequate" vitamin D; yet the subjects remain healthy.
