It seems to have been since last patch. Any other servers experiencing this (other than Gland obviously)?

Yes. have observed increased lag on several servers. The more crap code they throw on the heap the more it bogs the whole system down. I'm putting my bets on .NET.

I can't claim to have noticed any more lag than normally. Of course, ToEE is apparently still laggy after the patch, but as I've yet to run it, I can't say concerning that one.

Last two weeks we didn't lag wipe in the raids, and on Sunday we did lag in A Stay at the Inn, so I told the group to restart. I did learn that the High Road also uses 2049, 2050 etc instances. Commonly, as soon as you notice lag, by recalling, restarting and getting a different instance, you can avoid the lag (not always, but very often).

Lag isn't an abnormally in ddo.. it's pretty much all about how to deal with it.

well, you'll loose then... .NET ( 1.1 ) is only used by The Official Launcher.

All the rest is done through the TCP/IP and the UDP stacks, Direct X or kernel calls ( for IOs that are not in DX : HDD/SSD, Keyboard and Mouse )

That's why the alternate launchers works fine when .NET is broken on a system.

There were TWO!! Harbor and Market instances last night.

The server was probably busy calculating dps in the Lobster.

And they went to different instances?
Holy shit - no wonder the server is lagging!

Well there's still some lag that comes from PNAP notwork... but otherwise I'm going to agree that most of the lag we see nowadays is Server Induced.

It seems that some latency generated in the backend network appears on the frontr end network... While nowadays It would be considered bad coding
( single thread, single process stuff, nothing in parallel ), at the time DDO was released it wasn't completely weird... even on a server software.

But that doesn't means that they are Windows Servers and especially that doesn't means that the servers uses .NET...
As I said, only the launcher uses it client side, mainly to talk to the AAA server ( the GLS server ) and also to get the command line organized to launch the client.
The rest of the game is .NET free.

I'm still doing TRACERTs.  Until I do more, I'm not ready to rule out that lag that exists only on Orien and not on Sarlona, Argo, and the other servers isn't attributable to ISP, sound card driver, and fragmented SSD.

The DDO game servers are DEFINITELY Windows servers. Most are probably virtualized too. Except for what you said about the Launcher, I do not believe the game, either on the server end or client end, uses .NET though.

It would explain everything. .NET: the insta-just-add-water, poof! you're now a programmer! kit for generation "we ran out of letters for you lazy entitled fucks".

Note I expect the server was probably straight c/c++ circa 2009 when the servers performed admirably, and this crap has been introduced in the Hipster Doofus era. I have yet to meet a new graduate who does not want to use a big red easy button library like .NET. "Agile" PHBs love it (almost as much as virtualisation). Both result in shit performance.

Add Argo to the list, I ran a quick Tor last night and was rubberbanding so bad that at one point when I was falling it kept snapping me back up, I looked like the archer elf out of that 80s movie (Hawk the Slayer?) where they replayed the film repeatedly to make it look like he fired a dozen arrows between jumping and hitting the ground.

Just when I thought they were getting a handle on lag, we get this crap again Angry

[Turbine] Orien is the new default server.  We wouldn't want to have a bug-free Grotto quest and lag-free Harbor quests for those brand new players, they might expect continued excellence or something.  [/Turbine]
