That's where we want to get the beginners to.

Beginners might not have Harper. Mech. gets Int to damage for those xbows at lvl 6. Though I admit I cringe a little, seeing all the level-ups go to Dex.
Arguably Mech just isn't a beginner tree, since they can't use their main weapon until the tree gives them proficiency.

Proficiency comes with the first core. So that's not all that burdensome. The DEX to hit and INT to damage split makes the build look schizoid compared to what most of us would do, although assuming you wear gear with the same stat bonus to both the worst spread is maybe 10-12 points between INT and DEX (between AP spent, starting stats and level ups) at level 20. Not counting KTA you're -5 or -6 damage relative to where you would be. Not ideal but not horrific. And especially for a new player who will probably not notice when various buffs are running out.

I agree, main stat is Int, but the build needs 21 dex without tomes to qualify for both Combat Archery and Improved Sneak Attack.

Also, we can't assume Harper access for int to hit., as Spathic points out.

Proficiency in light xbows comes with the first core.

Mechs get their shit parceled out to them over time. No, it's not burdensome, but it can leave a beginner not knowing WTF to do. Sure, most everybody spends Korthos swinging a big axe, but a beginner thinks they're supposed to use their class weapon. Then they can't use half of them for five more levels, but once they get hvy xbow, it's almost impossible to tell the difference, so WTF was going on there? All on top of learning how to Rogue. Jes sayin', that's not beginner friendly.

Wiki have it wrong?

Arbalester: Increases your ranged sneak attack and Point Blank Shot range by 5 meters for every trained Mechanic Core enhancement. You also gain proficiency with great crossbows

Legit question as I haven't done a mech in a couple of years. But I remember using the collaborator great xbow right off the bat. Might have just sucked it up on the proficiency penalties though.

No. I got lazy & went with memory. Always a bad choice for me. Sorry. Gxbows slipped my mind completely.

The piecemeal gains are actually spread out worse than I stated. Gxb with first point in the tree, light repeater at lvl 6, and hvy at 12.

Gxbows aren't anything to sneeze at, but repeaters are better in earlier levels. I forget when the gxbow starts to match repeaters, but it isn't until 16ish at the earliest. Then gxbow is better in epics. For pure mech.

Not sure I would shoot for combat archery without tomes especially as it is an epic feat and a new player may or may not be interested in Epic levels. Getting to 19 for IPS is more realistic especially on a first lifer.

I wouldn't worry about combat archery either.  21 - overwhelming 24 improved sneak attack

But this is really for 1 - 20 an TR, so it doesn't really matter.

This is a good set up. 5fs's dex/int split is correct for new accounts. there isnt a way to get dex to dmg on xbows and harper's int to hit/dmg isnt feasible for a brand new player. having these starter guides accessible goes a long way in making the new player experience more enjoyable.

the iconic classes have a great feature where they are gifted a complete set of gear and some potions and items. wish there were a way to implement this for all new characters. the only thing missing after that point is finding a guild and getting someone to craft few items for them.

How many new players follow the vault?  Just asking.

But I might do something like this for my helf racial.  Arti dile for early use of repeaters and a few handy scrolls (conjure bolts, flame arrows).
It's not new player friendly since helf is p2p, but it seems like a decent way to get the +2 cha when combined with dborn racials.

No, let me be Frank.

I think more than we realize. Plus, googling "new player build for <>" might return something made in this last century.

5FS is doing DDO a major solid here.

Agreed. Copy and pasting your prior builds with minor modifications is just spamming this board. Brand new players aren't going to find these builds, and with the amount of negativity toward SSG on here, would you even want them to come here? Isn't the goal to retain new players?

This stuff is up for discussion. I've gotten useful feedback. It will be published for reals later on.

So go on and say it. I am a total newb. I know it. I am an old school D&D player but really new to DDO. Can't say I am seeing how to use this. You have 2 different point builds (28 and 32) but when I start a character the stats are predetermined by what I assume is class and race. Ok with that said I am trying to build a self sufficient rogue for soloing. I am intrigued by the repeater build and would like to steer that way before I do anything wrong. At this moment I have stopped at level 3 without spending any points. I can see the direction I need to go for them on your template so that is good. As I progress I plan to acquire tombs for stat increases and kinda need clarification on which to get. I see people saying DEX does nothing for crossbows (but wouldn't it still be nice to have for AC just in case?). And that INT is the way to go for damage bonus? This is where they lose me. How does INT help damage with a crossbow? Or am I reading this wrong? Sorry for all this rambling lmao. Really would appreciate some direction. Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
