I will ask that as things solidify decision wise, it's made more clear than in the past what aspects are locked down, and when, so we can move on from those debates. (In an ideal world, a 1 week heads up on what aspects are about to go into lockdown would be preferable, but we both know that never really happens in practice.)

I remain skeptical.

Fourteen and a half months ago, someone had this to say:

Quote:

For the past year and a half, I'm sure this change has been discussed in meetings and over lunch and in hallways and wherever two or more people meet.

This may be an "alpha" release, but it represents the intentions of the people who've been developing and discussing it, and it's been on the radar for quite a while.

If the decision makers had started hashing this out a couple months ago, the "not set in stone" thing would be plausible, but from Vargouille's (and others) comments it feels as though you're pretty vested in he direction that the alpha previews.

It does not appear that anyone with influence kept up with the concerns presented in that thread.

Quote:

You may be sincere, but other people have set our expectations through their actions.

We've been told that "nothing is set in stone" before and seen the results.

MadFloyd started the Let's Talk thread with a context and spirit that was very easy to be enthusiastic about and buy into.
Quote:
Some of you might dismiss this as ‘fixing something that isn’t broke' and that’s fine – it’s totally subjective – but, hey, I’m giving you a heads up just the same.

We hate the Enhancement UI. It’s been 4 years and I still cringe every time I see it, let alone use it. It does a poor job of letting players plan out character goals and you need the patience of a saint to use it. I could go on and on, but I won’t (feel free to use this thread to vent your frustrations with it if you share our opinion).

We’re re-doing it – replacing it with a tree-based design that should make character planning and advancement much better and also have the added benefit of making it easier for us to implement new enhancements (PrE’s anyone?).

It will also be the foundation for some future work.

It does mean that when this goes live, all of you will have your enhancements reset and you will have to re-spend your action points. Some enhancements will remain the same, but many will be new. The changed enhancements will also help balance out many classes (think augmentation here, not nerfs). I appreciate that forced change can be very stressful and realize that this will be major inconvenience for those who don’t enjoy having to make a ton of decisions – especially when there are ‘new’ enhancements to digest, but have no doubt it will be worth it in the end.

I hope that many of you will welcome this sort of change, but either way, feel free to share your thoughts and concerns. Again, I invite PMs for those who prefer to voice their opinions that way.

If the "alpha" had been a demonstration and shakedown of the tree selection technology where the existing class and prestige enhancements and their costs had been used with a statement along the lines of "The changes and additions to prestige enhancements will be put in place next week, but help us make sure we nailed at least this much first", the "nothing set in stone" would be believable.

This feels very consistent with past practice.

It feels like Turbine is taking the rich diversity of potent and relevant character builds and deliberately stepping on it.

dear unofficial person,

It's great you brought this out in early alpha, it's the right thing to do. Just don't let the marketdroids push it in until it's done - I can see that some stuff I'm expecting has moved to feats / etc. It will all take time to digest.

Although please kick Pando up the bun k thanks Cheesy

By the way maj, when you do get around to knocking out the pure vs multiclassing surveys, I'd strongly recommend including whether folks would consider advising others to use given splits on a 28/32/34/36 basis, and what past lives they view as 'mandatory' to keep up and why.

Mouser,

I have it on good authority from NCSoft Arenanet's hiring QA folks of varying seniority.  Just sayin.  Bellevue's nice this time of year.

I like any company that puts "No B Titles" in their job description.

Not real happy with the loss of 1d6 of sneak damage on the Half-Elf Rogue dilly tree. Instead, we get +2 to hit on sneak attacks (BFD) and +2d6 sneak damage.

I'd post this on one of the feedback threads on the DDO Forums but, well...

Mouser, you either didn't see my post on the other forum or avoided to answer to it...

As I mentioned also in MadFloyd thread long ago, what we have right now is tree based.
It would have been simpler for everybody to just revamp the UI and keep the current enhancements.

See I even made an ASCII drawing :

Note : that it was on MadFloyd Thread, Page 3...

I'll try to do something better, integrated in the new UI... later today, but right now I'm off for some serious rockhounding... ( I need to stock up Honey Calcite and Bellecroix Roses for an incoming Rockound meet... and I've been waiting for month to be able to do it, weather wasn't cooperating )

Ok, back from rockhounding, and I had time to play with photoshop :

That's the current live Radiant Servant Tree.

At the bottom you have from Left to Right : Improved Healing, Divine Vitality, Life Magic, Prayer of Life.

Prayer of Incredible life is at level 1.
Stat Bonus ( Charisma ) is at Level 3

At top from Left to Right : Improved Turning, Radiant Servant I, Radiant Servant II.

It's not THAT difficult to make a tree out of what we already have.

Going to post it on the main forum too.

They should have waited a few month to come here... Right now it's the plain wrong time as our president is forcing down our throat the Gay Wedding ( I have nothing against it, I don't care who fucks who as long as they don't try to fuck me ) , the gay adoption, and the lesbian assisted procreation... ( and this I have problem with... if they want children why can't they make them the way it's been intended by nature ? A Good Fucking... )

As I said he's ramming it down our throat at high speed, because all his electoral promises have been rejected as unconstitutional so far.
75% tax for those that earns more than 1 Million Euro a year, rejected twice, and the last time with the added indignity that no more than 66% overall could be taken for taxes,
A Potential Law to make people pay more for the Electricity and the Gaz if they used more than the average was also found unconstitutional ( it was something he promised to please the Greens ), inapplicable and against the principle of equality

And to add to the injury :

His ( former ) Finance minister, White Knight of the Tax Evasion Fight, was found guilty of lies and of having an undeclared account in Singapore ( after it was transfered from Switzerland ) to evade taxes. And the culprit even has the guts, now that he is not more minister to try to get back his seat at the assembly.

Now if only Mouser could acknowledge that he saw my nice pic.  Wink

Hey, Maj, I'd really like to believe you. You seem like a great guy, but we all know the decisions are made higher up the food chain. We've all seen dev's pet projects go to live in spite of overwhelming hatred from the playerbase, often for dubious reasons. I am still enjoying my lag free play from the TWF change a few years ago, for instance, and that new Cloak of Ice? Feather_of_Sucking awesome.

For all the claims of "early alpha" I just don't see the dev team as being willing or capable of considering substantive change at this time, let alone implementing it. The comments made so far indicate that all we can expect is slight changes to costs, but I strongly doubt that the overall direction or focus is going to be changed, particularly the insane 42-46AP investment to gain skills that are pretty cheap on live at level 12, the lock-in to a single tree, and the useless options that just take up space.

The many missing prestiges for the ToD sets, and everything else? Never going to happen. The cleric trees are pathetic, and moving spellpower from cheap enhancements over to expensive skill points is sheer lunacy. Making Heal and Repair relevant should involve a carrot, not a stick (or nerfbat). The new Spellcraft skill is just the cherry on top, because I already struggled spending my measly few skill points per level on useful stuff like concentration, UMD, balance, or diplomacy.

If this steaming turd represents a year of solid focus by the dev team following four years of promises, well, I for one don't see much hope for it getting better in the months before it hits live.

Go ahead, surprise me. I'll be watching off and on for the next few weeks, as I don't expect dramatic change tomorrow, or until after you've done the first pass for each class. But I'll eat my shorts* if this pass delivers even on half of the dev promises about enhancements over the past four years and more.

I haven't run a quest this weekend or even logged in today. That is ... highly unusual.... for me. Doubt I will tomorrow either. I should run through my stable of characters sometime this week to clean out my mail and prepare them for a longer absence, who knows.

Perhaps this malaise will pass, and I'll be back in the saddle, running my favourite characters next weekend without worrying about the looming pigeonholing. Maybe Khyber will freeze over, and Glin and the other decision makers will step up and make some commitments. Giving you a unilateral veto over when this hits live would be a good first step, as would hiring someone like that guy who did the Bard ED. From what I recall, he did an amazing job at soliciting feedback on the forums, listening to it, and getting shit done. You haven't got anyone left like that on the dev team. Maybe the QA side (squeak seems good), but not the devs.

Dunno. I'm not ready to post a ragequit, or a sadquit, but the more I think about this, the more disappointed I get. I'm going for a bike ride.

*go ahead, make me buy some edible underwear. I triple dog dare you.

Did that starting about a week ago.  Haven't run any content for about a week and a half.  I'll hold onto my characters for a couple updates to see if the game improves, but I don't see it happening.

Dooooooom!!!!!!

Geez.  People are going ape shit.  How many times does this need to happen and then find out that it's really not the end of the world for Chicken Little to quit screaming and crying about how the sky is falling?

I remember the wailing over F2P.  I remember the wailing over the tempest changes.  I remember the AC changes wailing.  The spellpower change wailing.  The tomes in the store wailing.  The FvS losing unlimited winging.  And on and on and on.

It's an MMO people.  Change happens.  I have favorite builds from 4 years ago that were sweet and well geared and owned all the content.  Then level caps went up.  Epics showed up.  New gear came in.  Changes were made.  The builds I had sucked.  I changed and found new ones.  I like them just as much if not better now.

With the new stuff, sure what you have been doing might not work anymore.  But this is also opening up new possibilities.  1 week in with 1% of the population looking at 1/3rd of the possibly available features with the devs admitting that it's not all done yet and some things (haste boost) are still coming and people are sure it is a definite pile of shit and thinking about quitting the game.  Unreal.

Do you people understand what ALPHA phase means in development terms?  FFS.  People are getting demoralized 1 week into ALPHA review of something that won't be live for months to come?

Calm the fuck down people.  This is not the time to panic.

Who gives a flying fuck if its called alpha or omega testing? What we do know is based on past experience. That Turbine is basically unwilling to change things once it hits Lamania despite massive feed back saying that what they are about to do is a steaming pile of horse shit.

The problem is that what you see in this "alpha" is basically what you are going to get when it goes live. That's the way they do things.

There is nothing wrong with letting them know what they are doing is a pile of crap when its a pile of crap.

so basically what I am saying to you is shut the fuck up.

I remember the wailing over F2P.  I remember the wailing over the tempest changes.  I remember the AC changes wailing.  The spellpower change wailing.  The tomes in the store wailing.  The FvS losing unlimited winging.  And on and on and on.

Those changes (aside from F2P) were very minor. They affected very very very small portions of the population. EVERY character is going to be affected by this change. Unless people decide to forego enhancements completely, LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER IN THE ENTIRE GAME WORLD will be affected by the changes to enhancements. So yes, it's kind of a big deal.

And if you've been around for any amount of time, you know just how well Turbine deals with changing things based on player feedback. You know how often buggy horrible shitty stuff gets put into the game after dozens of bug reports and hundreds of forum posts. Breca was the only dev I ever saw take advice and change stuff based on feedback. And guess what? Breca got shitcanned. So we're left with Varg and MF and Eladrin. Has MF even made an appearance anytime lately?
