Hey, Maj, I'd really like to believe you. You seem like a great guy, but we all know the decisions are made higher up the food chain. We've all seen dev's pet projects go to live in spite of overwhelming hatred from the playerbase, often for dubious reasons. I am still enjoying my lag free play from the TWF change a few years ago, for instance, and that new Cloak of Ice? Feather_of_Sucking awesome.
For all the claims of "early alpha" I just don't see the dev team as being willing or capable of considering substantive change at this time, let alone implementing it. The comments made so far indicate that all we can expect is slight changes to costs, but I strongly doubt that the overall direction or focus is going to be changed, particularly the insane 42-46AP investment to gain skills that are pretty cheap on live at level 12, the lock-in to a single tree, and the useless options that just take up space.
The many missing prestiges for the ToD sets, and everything else? Never going to happen. The cleric trees are pathetic, and moving spellpower from cheap enhancements over to expensive skill points is sheer lunacy. Making Heal and Repair relevant should involve a carrot, not a stick (or nerfbat). The new Spellcraft skill is just the cherry on top, because I already struggled spending my measly few skill points per level on useful stuff like concentration, UMD, balance, or diplomacy.
If this steaming turd represents a year of solid focus by the dev team following four years of promises, well, I for one don't see much hope for it getting better in the months before it hits live.
Go ahead, surprise me. I'll be watching off and on for the next few weeks, as I don't expect dramatic change tomorrow, or until after you've done the first pass for each class. But I'll eat my shorts* if this pass delivers even on half of the dev promises about enhancements over the past four years and more.
I haven't run a quest this weekend or even logged in today. That is ... highly unusual.... for me. Doubt I will tomorrow either. I should run through my stable of characters sometime this week to clean out my mail and prepare them for a longer absence, who knows.
Perhaps this malaise will pass, and I'll be back in the saddle, running my favourite characters next weekend without worrying about the looming pigeonholing. Maybe Khyber will freeze over, and Glin and the other decision makers will step up and make some commitments. Giving you a unilateral veto over when this hits live would be a good first step, as would hiring someone like that guy who did the Bard ED. From what I recall, he did an amazing job at soliciting feedback on the forums, listening to it, and getting shit done. You haven't got anyone left like that on the dev team. Maybe the QA side (squeak seems good), but not the devs.
Dunno. I'm not ready to post a ragequit, or a sadquit, but the more I think about this, the more disappointed I get. I'm going for a bike ride.
*go ahead, make me buy some edible underwear. I triple dog dare you.
