Dungeons and Dragons license?
Feb 11th, 2014 at 4:32am
Print Post
I heard a rumor that Turbine will lose it's license for the name this year. Are they shitting me, or is it true?

All mr google gave me was this: https://www.ddo.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-337927.html?s=aef561457673b3cbc80...

I'm of course not going to read that whole thread.

Nope. I was asking if someone smart (read: not you), could tell me more about this subject.

Reading is hard, yo!

DDO will lose its license on May 25, but will shut down the servers on April 14 for tax purposes.

Hope this helps.

Well the thread was only posted so ya'll couldn't say "prove it or GTFU". I honestly don't give a fuck.

I was just curious if Turbine's gonna do another "oops, we forgot to renew our license, and that's why you can't do shit atm". Like they did with the domain name.

Old news, and I'd hope Turbine don't renew their D&D license annually.

Still delusional enough to think you have anything worth saying. Your thread is shit, your posts are shit, and your life must be truly the shittiest to have to spend all this effort on saying so little that's already been said by other people. Really, save yourself the cringing in the future, and just chone your account, then take your PC down to a charity shop so someone who needs it for something other than posting banal tripe can make use of it.

Turbine holds the license through May 13, 2016, per an Amendment to the original license.

The easiest link is from the Turbine v. Atari lawsuit:

http://www.courthousenews.com/2009/08/26/Atari.pdf

paragraph 6.

For all of Turbine and DDO's myriad faults, Cryptic and NWO were worse in pretty much every way that matters. I doubt anyone at WotC considers the Cryptic experiment successful.

I have it on good authority WOTC is in negotiations with Zynga to take over the D&D license.  Once they are final, Zynga will begin work on Dragon Crush.

OK, from an IP holder's perspective (not a fan's perspective), how is NWO worse? Aren't they like 20x the playerbase of DDO?

I mean, look at D&D4.0, it's not like WotC holds the spirit of D&D sacred, they worship the $ just like Turdbin.

And with NWO's site traffic strong and stable, and DDO's on a steep and steady decline and about to drop off the Alexa rankings, how could WotC see more $ in Turdbin than Cryptic? How could they sell the idea to investors or the board of directors?

http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/ddo.com
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/playneverwinter.com
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/perfectworld.com

(Note that playneverwinter.com is their MyDDO equivalent, and perfectworld.com is for all of their games, but Neverwinter accounts for 27% of the search traffic to perfectworld.com so no matter how you slice it they're pretty much crushing DDO in the web traffic department)

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

Perfectworld is pretty horrible.  They are what I classify as a 'bleeder' corporation.  They buy a company, bleed its IP and Fanbase, and then put the game on maintenance mode.

Hmmmm, sounds an awful lot like what we're going through right now. The big question is will it happen at the end of this week or at the end of this this year.

You can't buy stat tomes, XP stones, quest teleports, or loot re-rolls in NWO, so I have a hard time believing anyone who tells me Cryptic is bleeding the fanbase harder.

Not that it doesn't suck, just that Turdbin/Cryptic is more kettle/pot than Angel/Demon.

What I'd really love is to see some independent company jump on the OGL d20 rules and make something like Path of Exile but with the ability to publish modules like NWO's Foundry.

With Pathfinder Online, Path of Exile, and the NWO Foundry, the pieces are all out there. I don't think I'll have too long to wait  Smiley
