This whole Akamai bullshit is lame, why do ppl bitch about it so much?

My problem with it is the bullshit way that the rollout was handled.

Pando handing out viruses.
Turbine adding Akamai to Llama by accident without telling anyone.
Turbine promising that this was a mistake and that it wouldn't be rolled out to Live.
Turinbe rolling out Akami to Live.

Par for the course.

You forgot to add:

- Complaints on forums, Turbine promising to allow removal ok Akamai

- several updates and yet nothing done on that front

Exactly this.

I keep wanting to believe them, and they keep lying to us and being jerks. Isn't this right after they formed the players council so they could listen to us? And I drank the koolaid, yay players' council, Turbine is finally on the mend. Only, they're not on the mend, they just found a new way to get some of us to believe their lies.

To any Turdbin lurker, you aren't getting credit for "communicating" or "listening" for many months before or after a jerk move like this. I just can't believe anything you say because you keep proving that you are duplicitous scum. It makes me want to give my gaming dollars to your competition out of spite.

Please keep this in mind the next time you are tempted to lie, equivocate, or just silently sneak in something you suspect we will not like.

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

I don't believe they are overtly lying, equivocating, or sneaking, because those are actions, and actions require effort.

Shoddy version control, inept inter-office communication, undocumented pet projects, and a culture of "the stuff the last guy did isn't important enough to understand" are much more likely.

OK, I see that now, but there was a while where hope struggled to the top and I thought maybe it was Cry

Don't attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence, I know, but I think the NetSession forced install on Lamania followed by the stony silence at the outcry rises above simple apathy. We actually got communication to "placate those whiny bitches" as Kimberlite so aptly put it, and it strongly implied that it wouldn't be on Live.

When we pressed for clarification because we saw a little wiggle room and suspected a rat, we got nothing.

Then it went live and the cries and lamentations of the masses poured forth, and again we got nothing, for days, leaving the last official communication an implied promise that it wouldn't be live.

I agree there is an (un)healthy dose of incompetence there, but there is also a generous helping of intentional misdirection, and I resent that even more than the incompetence.

Fortunately, I do have some small say in the matter, I get to choose who I pay, and until this gets better and stays better for a significant amount of time (i.e. longer than a couple of weeks or months) I choose to not pay Turbine.

I'll start paying again when they shape up and hold it for long enough to convince me it's real, and each lie resets the timer and makes the "hold it" threshold a bit longer.

LOL, yes, it does bear a strong resemblance to an abusive partner, I wonder if I need counciling? Maybe that's what the players council is supposed to be for?

Majmal has a katana. I'd rather place hope in the katana. If we all raise our hands to the sky, and will our spiritual energies together - the collective spirit ball can empower our champion.

If by "abuse" you mean "Suffering the consequences of their bad decisions" then yes, they are. Otherwise, not so much so Tongue

They were formed to gather more information of what people want to see "in" game and how to steer the direction of their new content and fix up underlying problems.

No way has Turdbine ever thought about including us in their financial and IT decisions.  In these decisions it's what is best for business, not what the player wants.

I missed this one today... It might have enlightened my boring afternoon to answer it... Instead I'm doing that between the desert and the wine.

*shrug* Oh well, shit happens. ( I was really bored this afternoon )

There's several fails from Turbine :
- First one is that as soon as Pando went under, they should have updated the update process so that it removed Pando from the computers that still had it.
- The Second one is not the Akamai Fail on Lammania... If you look closely at what Rowan said, Akamai Netsession was intended to be inserted into the Launcher...
But they inserted the wrong one. ( with P2P active and no warning. )

What was not Failed is the following :
Rowan never promised that he would remove Akamai Netsession, he just told that there was a versioning issue on it. ( in layman term : the piece of crapware you were given is not the one that will actually ship in the end )

The Akamai Netsession Debacle started before the Council was formed... but it wasn't by much. ( a week at best )
I did warn Turbine on the player council board ( ok, Sunday Afternoon for me, so Sunday morning for Turbine... so really late ) that if they hadn't addressed the Akamai Netsession Problem in the Monday Morning update they were going to be in a world of hurt. ( I plead Guilty here : I should have warned them earlier... 1 Sunday before hell breaking loose is not enough )

Honestly, we just have been shown today some of the result of our feedback... and I have to say that all the time spent giving feedback ( mostly by other PC members in that case ) have had nice results...
Now I know I'm saying that right after several paragraphs of Pure Turbine Fanboi-ism, so I know it will be taken with a huge grain of salt.

But you guys know *why* they did it, right?  If it went down any other way than this, I'd be shocked.

Turbine Beancounters: "Christ, this update is SIX GIGS?  We have a distribution server that goes down more than a two-dollar whore, and a contract with Charter that rapes us in the ass on a daily basis.  This push is gonna cost us a million bucks!"

Warner Beancounters: "Use a delivery network, you tards.  Hey, Akamai!  You're the biggest thing going!  Whatcha got?"

Akamai: "For you, 12 cents a gig, but only because we've been working together for 15 years already."

WB: "Ye gads!  Give us a deeeeeeal."  *sadface*

A: "Tell you what, if you put it through NetSession instead of the normal channels, we'll drop it to 7."

TB: "The playerbase will have great concerns about these invasive softwares!  The forums will be in an uproar from the 17 people who don't have real jobs and think they know how networks run!"

WB: "Shut it.  We'll clean it up in post!"

The end.

Because it's great for business to push out a change that has a significant segment of the playerbase enraged and alienated?
Of course it's their game and they can do whatever they want to it - run it into the ground so they can move on to the shiny new Infinite Crisis if that's what they want.

But they should at least have a chance to see how much damage the choice did, so if they ever do decide to really change they'll have some data (i.e my reaction as one of many, not my reaction as "the one to listen to") to make informed decisions from.

I do appreciate what you do, Flav, but "listening about a few things" isn't enough. It's not the sacherine fanboi posts, it's the fact that doing a few nice things doesn't make up for even one bad thing. A tablespoon of wine in a barrel of sewage is sewage, but a tablespoon of sewage in a barrel of wine is still sewage.

I honestly don't see powergamers as being Turbine's main priority. I see the age group of 35+ on the game and I suspect that Turbine beancounters realise that they make more money off of people who pay for 'features', play the game for a couple hours and log off rather than players who spend 20 hours a day and spend nothing.

Haunted Halls shows the perfect dungeon for that. Good reward (well not the black stones), replayibilty and mostly optionals with the main quest being quick.
