Possible new expansion

So the price for the big surprise of the year ( or bullshit) goes to Sev

[QUOTE=Severlin] We are planning out the future of DDO in years, and discussing the possibility of an expansion near the end of 2017. Cool things are coming.

Severlin talking about a possible update in 2017?  But wait,

Novalis wrote on Jul 8th, 2016 at 2:31am:
Well, I predicted that May was going to be the death rattle of DDO in conjunction to the rumors of things slowing up if the current team couldn't increase revenue. I was a couple months short but here it is. Black and white. So all that planning for the latest updates, the passes, the store sales was all just window dressing for one final cash grab. Nice way to go out. Just like the con jobs they chose to be.

Just someone confirm for me that Steelshit, Vagisil and Cordo-stain are finally out of a job and must now get their semen stained asses at the end of the unemployment line. These face fuckers and their personally assembled twink army are directly responsible for destroying the game in one year quicker than the 9 years it took to build it up.

In a sense I'm glad DDO is finally dead. It's just sad these sacks of shit made me feel that way and took it down with them.

Lol.  Novalis is wrong in his DOOOOOM predictions again.  A broken clock is still right twice a day.  Novalis is even less accurate.  What a moron.

The only way this is plausible is if "planning years out" also means "plans for years out are not necessary".

I suppose that "An expansion near the end of 2017" is possible in the same sense that it's "possible" that Ross Perot will step in at the last minute and be elected president over Hillary and Trump at the end of 2016.

Yeah, I saw that thread.  My skepticism meter is redlined.

I mean, can the people who can't code loot, something they've been doing for 10 years, actually make an entire new expansion?  Sure, the NRL is a new way of coding loot, but they screwed it up so very much, have not announced any plans to fix it, and plan on building NewCC on top of that already broken foundation.  It's bound to be a clusterfuck.

With that simple project seeming to be well beyond their capabilities to apply good project management skills to, apply good QA processes to, or even knuckle down and fix it after they release it bugs and all into the live environment, does anyone really think they have the talent on staff for an expansion?

No, let me be Frank.

There is a big difference between "plans" and "execution".  Lots of businesses have plans that never come to pass.  Every business is a going concern, right up until the moment it shuts down.  Even businesses on the decline have plans to turn it all around.

This rarely happens.  I think the last time it happened was Update 6.

Nobody here thinks they have the talent on staff for what we would be comfortable calling an expansion.

I'm certain that Sev thinks they have more than enough talent for an expansion.

Look at the last thing they called an expansion.  I've got a box of dryer lint that could pull that off.

I'd hold off on criticizing Novalis based on this post by Severlin.  The expansion is complete vaporware at this time, and might never happen.  Even Severlin didn't say anything resembling 'definite plans.'

Criticizing Novalis for jumping the gun on DOOOOOM posts is always appropriate.  But I agree with you.  A "possible" expansion 18 months out isn't even vaporware.  That's an insult to vaporware.

You know, original Everquest was still putting out expansions ~15 years after it's release, and the game is even STILL played. I dunno why we gotta be so doomey about DDO.

I, for one, am excited about the prospect of an expansion.

Well, it used to be that there was more useful information here than on the official forums, and certainly the builds forum is still very good.  And as you mentioned previously, the Vault was a close-knit group of active DDO players.  Now it's sort of 50/50 gotta wade through a lot of puke and diarrhea to find the occasional nugget that isn't corn....

A lot of the active players stopped playing but stuck with the community, then we seem to have gathered a lot of fuckwits for some reason, probably because of the lack of moderation. Its a double-edged sword. On the one hand, I enjoy being able to call people fuckwits, but on the otherhand... marty.

To qualify... I'm here because of the MoBo's restrictive  posting policies.

Seriously, Erdogan in Turkey would be proud of that kind of repression of opinion.

I for one, do not believe that "lack of talent" is the problem (although under-staffing might be).

The REAL problem as I see it is how the staff's talents are being utilized. Getting the most from people is the producer's job.

And as we've seen, the current DDO Production Lead is of... Lesser quality.

Soft management skills (re: People skills) and talent ASSESSMENT are what makes things fly. Getting people to play to their strengths while mitigating the gaps in expertise and throwing a rug over the scuff marks.

Petulant and domineering bosses looking to pad their CV by stepping on the corpses of their staff's careers and well-being does not aid or assist in this endeavour.

Best Advice (for this Blue Sky Expansion that will likely never see the light of day, see "Desert, Anauroch") is to leverage the Art Department to make shit look super sexy-slick, and keep the coding and level design well within the wheel-house of the in-house keyboard-mashers. Don't bother with "balance" or "Power Creep" because you'll just cock it up anyway.

Better yet, outsource the "hard" coding to India or China for $1. I'm sure there's a 14 year old over there who could suss out the "spaghetti code" in a day or two.

You (the Turbine lurkers) can have this consultation advice for free.

We won't tell, we promise  Grin

No, this one is definitely going to be better than dryer lint. The new expansion, released for DDO and LOTRO simultaneously, is "The Menace of Mordor"! Since Sev is EP of both games now, with his trusty sidekick Cordovan runnng roughshod over both forums, and neither really knows anything about either game, they'll merge them!

With the merged populations both games will seem more alive, but they won't have to duplicate all the work of maintaining 2 distinct games.

And by the time they get done migrating it to a mobile platform, nobody will notice that the two games had a different style. It's a win all the way around!

Yes, merging two completely different games. Seems totally legit.

Actually, having played a little LotRO, honestly if they took a couple of the dungeons as-is(just the art assetts, basically) and threw them in to DDO, added some basic DDO mobs/spawns, scripted some objectives... it wouldn't suck is all I'm sayin.

Sev's comment isn't anything of substance.  It was just a convenient excuse to remind everyone how stupid Novalis is and that he was wrong in May and he's still wrong.  Coming back and claiming victory like he did was dumb.

I've never had a good experience with outsourcing coding to India or China.  The results remind you of the saying "you get what you pay for".  There is a reason that service is so cheap.  The only thing worse is outsourcing your call center to India and making your customers talk to someone for whom English is a second language.  At best.

Sev's comment isn't anything of substance.  It was just a convenient excuse to remind everyone how stupid Novalis is and that he was wrong in May and he's still wrong.  Coming back and claiming victory like he did was dumb.

LOL, ok, that's up (down?) to vault standards, carry on  Cheesy

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

An expansion might actually be exciting.  Maybe.  I've been disappointed before, and by before, I mean every update for the past 18 months.  I don't know know how to feel about this yet but I'm going to predict Severlin fucks it up again.

meh, the only good take-away from Sev's post is the soft confirmation that, 1) DDO isn't going into maintenance mode in the next couple months U32 will drop and maybe even U33, and 2) that it won't likely be shut down this year either, pushing the possibility of either off to sometime mid 2017 if at all for now....
