Do you hate new players?

Skill Focus: anything is bad enough. Let the poor bastards have Point Blank, and Precise Shot. Or do you think if they start using a repeater, they'll discover Arcanotechnician is a punishment for not choosing Battle Engineer? Which itself is a punishment for not buying Harper, or splashing at least 5 Rogue.

Maybe. I was originally gonna do it more hybridy. It got harder to justify the high end caster stuff if you take PBS, PS, RS, and IC and it seems like a shame to suck at both. Besides, BE is gonna end up being the hybrid

Seems like half of AT is dog enhancements. They're gonna use it either way.

Aren't you just naming the real challenge of making viable beginner paths? I know it's said "the way out is through", but the way out of this particular trap is not through encouraging dog enhancements.

There are only two trees. They both have to be hybrids. Arcanotech can't justify the extra dex. All I'm suggesting is PBS & PS instead of two feats you're throwing in the garbage anyway.

The beautiful theory is that repeaters can help when spells/rune arm are on cooldown. The reality is a repeater in heroics is better than most of an arti's attack spells (and more than one buff seems designed specifically for casting on repeaters). That aside, PS can single-target the mobs that spells can't. It does fill a gap, rather than simply being sucky at the other enhancement tree's thing.

The passive bonuses for Imbue Defender and Arcane Engine (The spell power boosts) don’t require the dog to be out.  And spending the 6 APs just for the passives provides +30 Electric SP, and +18 USP.

Add Augment Summoning if Human

I can't be totally happy though, since this is still there. Remember the arguments over Dodge in Heavy Armor? It would be less of a waste to add Dodge. But let's just give humans the Heavy Armor proficiency, instead.

Level 4   : Rapid Shot Reload

Rapid Reload speeds up Xbows faster than RS. The Battle Engineer should have both, though. I'd sub out the Battle Engineer's Skill Focus UMD & add Rapid Shot. UMD is plentiful now.

Newbs don't know they should be jumpcasting, so the Battle Engineer might benefit more from Quick Draw than from an extra weapon focus. The Arcanotech would benefit more from Quick Draw or Rapid Reload than from UMD Focus.

Quickdraw would help if you're going to cast and shoot in a standard rotation. I figured that would be more of AT's MO though. Also I didn't think jumpcasting helped with that. Wouldn't you need Mobile Spellcasting instead? (which isn't bad in and of itself, but the prereqs blow. (Note to self: make a proposal for scaling Combat Casting))

All I run is flavour builds these days.  Even just building this one in my head, it can't be THAT bad.  I'll drag anything to 20.

I don't have carefully measured scientific measurements to verify this.  But, I took Quick Draw on my Arcanotech and noticed that I am not cursing at the game to "Fire the fucking crossbow already" anymore.

Jumpcasting just helps spells not get interrupted. As you can see, somewhere along the way my brain just stopped working.

You're right that an Arcanotech would benefit more from Quick Draw than a Battle Engineer, because they're supposed to use clickies & wands, etc. more often. But a BE uses them enough to benefit as well. In theory, it should speed up the delays before & after trap-setting, too.

It used to improve ROF, if I recall, because it sped up the reload animation. But it didn't after they changed the old broken animation so that it was broken in a new and different way, because reloading now takes place as part of the attack.

I always meant to test Quick Draw's effect on rune arm recharging, but it's been lower on my list. So I still don't know if it helps there at all.

I believe quickdraw speeds up the transition from reload to bolts in the air. I've been meaning to do a slow mo video test to see for sure but haven't

[Augment Summoning]
Do you hate new players?

Skill Focus: anything is bad enough.

Augment summoning is not a bad feat at all at low levels, unless you think it is too difficult to teach a new player how to use their once-per-life free feat swap.  It is better for classes which also summon monsters, like a Druid, but still handy for boosting the dog damage and survivability.

Skill Focus:UMD is just a poor feat choice.
For the 32 point build you get +1.5 umd by dropping con by 1 and putting those points into cha.
For the 28 point build you'd get +1 umd just by spending the 2 points you shorted the build in cha.
Drop int by 1 and you make up the difference.  +1 DC and a tiny bit of spell points isn't going to make or break the build.

And of all the class templates, why pick the class that already gets a decent boost to umd?  Raise Dead is a umd of 36.  Assuming the player buys umd to 23, gets the Arti +5, and has a +9 item that's a 17 cha for +3 totaling 31.  This gives a decent but not 100% chance to cast raise dead at 20th, and even several levels below 20th, but the +3 from skill focus isn't going to make or break the odds.  Especially if you're investing more in cha in the first place.  What else are you thinking a spell casting class will need to umd?

No, let me be Frank.

From what the team has teased so far, the artificer changes are pretty significant. Might be worth waiting until the first lamannia notes to do some more final tweaks if you feel stuck.

If only we knew someone who knows all the e-mails of all the Standing Stone Rock Stars!  And if only we could convince that person to make Steelstar spill the changes on the motherforums or something!
