DDO and 4k video
May 5th, 2015 at 11:33pm

Is anyone playing DDO with resolutions above 1920x1080?

I was considering getting a 50ish inch 4k resolution TV.

Does DDO support resolutions over 1920x1080?

Please share your experience with 4k ddo.  Resolution/settings/refresh rate etc... etc...

4k, dunno, but I run at 5760x1200 on 3 screens, and sometimes 1080p on a projector (110" screen).  It'll look fine on a 50".

It does support higher resolutions.
Like Pook, I run a 3 monitor setup at higher resolution.

My only comment is that the hotbars do not scale with resolution.
Sitting 3ft away at a computer is not too bad.

But if you go with a 50" tv, you're going to need to be at 6-7" away from the screen to avoid eye fatigue and not see all the pixels (assuming 1080p).
At that distance, text and the hotbar boxes can get very hard to see/read.  If the resolution is 1080, then take a screenshot of DDO at that resolution on a USB stick with you, plug it in and try viewing it from where you think you'll be sitting.

I once tried playing it on a standard 1080i res 65" TV and it wasn't very good for me.
If you're a minimalist, or you can remember the shortcut keys for all 200 hotbar slots - you're golden.   Wink

If you go with a TV, understand the specs.
True 4K (DCI) is 1.9:1 and will make the game look a little stretched.
Most consumer TV's seem to be UHD-1 which is 3840x2160 (the more  common ratio of 1.78:1).

1080i is the latest tech over here.
We just got the first shipments of it.  We even have LCD computer screens now.  Fitting those 3 CRT's on my desk was tough!

Nah, the 3 masters we have now are pretty zippy.
They could use a few more cannons though - it's pretty crazy out there.
Bloody French and Spaniards keep showing up in our territorial waters.

How many times do you have to cross the Date Line in order to time travel, anyway?  I ask because I'm planning a trip to NZ and I want to end up in the right century when I get there.

A few years ago I hooked my comp up to my uncles giant fucking TV 50" 60". I don't know, fucking giant. It was fucking awesome. I can barely see my hot bars on my regular monitor from just a few feet away so not really seeing them was no big. You use the same "hjeal meh" button for every toon right? You use the same, "shit fucking dies" buttons for every toon right? If so, your good to go.

Hypothetical question... If you had enough digits to count in base-10, do you think you could figure out all your grey hairs without taking your shoes off?

It's funny, I can tell the toons I haven't seriously played in a while, because everything's fucked up.  "WHY IS THAT THERE?  Aggggggh!"  *20 minutes moving hotkeys around...*

I'm surprised by how many people click on stuff though.  I use the mouse to aim, and that's about it.  Almost everything else is keyboard.  Ain't nobody got time for clicking.

Obvious is obvious... I play in 3840*1080. This answer question Nr. 1 and question Nr.2

FPS varies with the location : Black Loch goes down in the low 20FPS, the rest of the time I'm around 100ish FPS or more.

Note that this is not 4K... just dual screen.

I built my work area to safely support 3 21” Hitachi CRTs at 90lbs each (plus headroom for other relevant bits).  If I ever decide to move the computer elsewhere, I've got a nice surface for a milling machine in the bedroom.

I have used all of the following:

1) 3 x 24" LED
2) 6 x 24" LED [2 Rows]
3) 4 x 24" LED [Squared]
4) 55" LED TV [240ms 1920x1080{p} | 1280x720{p}]

If you are going with multiple monitors and you angle your screens you will want to run video card software to make up for screen buffer, this will remove the "skewed, angled down" feeling.  If you keep the screen straight there will be no issue.  I found the 3x 24" LED the most enjoyable.

For the 55" LED TV, I was playing from roughly 6 feet away, not sure if it is my eyes starting to fail or not but I found I had to drop the res to 1280x720 to make out chat and hotbar icons decently, even though it feels very squished on the screen.  As mentioned the hotbars don't exactly scale correctly.

I recently built a new rig and upgraded to playing DDO at 2560 x 1440.

The game looks a lot better than it did on my antiquated former computer, but it's still DDO...
When I want to feel like my rig is worthwhile, DDO is not the game I fire up. It's just not graphically impressive at any setting.

It might be worth researching what is required to run games at 4k. I read a while back that dual high end graphics cards would be needed, but I don't know if that is accurate or not.

If you want any kind of decent framerate, it helps.  I'm running 3 x 1G cards for four screens.  Next system might be 2x whatever's good at the time.
